Video: Harlem Man Throws, Whips Pit Bull Pup On Elevator

And you thought Coffee the dog had it bad. Police yesterday arrested an East Harlem man and charged him with aggravated cruelty to animals after security footage of him throwing around and whipping his pit bull puppy in his building's elevator came to light. The puppy, which is doing fine, has been taken to an Animal Care & Control shelter in Manhattan.

In the graphic video (below) from the NYPD, 46-year-old East Harlem man Irving Sanchez can be seen swinging his brown-and-white year-old puppy Max around by its leash. Later he slams the dog against the walls of the elevator, smacks it with its leash and kicks it. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Sunday night at the Wagner Houses on First Avenue.

For what it's worth, Sanchez's wife tells ABC that she is disabled and that Max is her service dog. Further, she says the charges against her husband, who has nine prior arrests for drug possession, are "completely inconsistent with the gentle and kind husband she knows."

And this is not the first time that video footage of animal abuse in an elevator has led to an arrest. Last year another Harlem man was busted after surveillance video surfaced of him repeatedly coaxing a chihuahua onto his leg before kicking.

  • Why do people think pit bulls are the only aggressive dogs out there?  I have a rescued boxer and she's totally dog aggressive after she was attacked by another dog at a dog run (also not a pit bull).  I see friendly pit bulls all the time playing with other dogs.  It's the lack of proper care given by the owner.  Just like people who have kids that can't provide what it takes to be a good parent... generally deep rooted problems stem from childhood.  If this dog is aggressive, whose fault is it?  The asshole that is beating it, plain and simple.  I hope he falls down a flight of stairs and can't get help for several hours.

psycho in a tuque  at the dawn of  the summer starts with puppies then escalates to humans.

  • So has he been arrested or charged on animal cruelty?! I didn't watch the video but I could imagine how horrible.

  • Don't watch it. It is disgusting. As soon as they get onto the elevator, the dog is exhibiting fear. He knew what was coming.

  • I'm not surprised at the unintelligent comments above. It is a little surprising, however, that so many other people "like" such stupid comments. 99% of pit owners are assholes...Really? Nothing wrong with that man is doing.. really? Get a brain and think for yourself.
Anyway, this man is a sick bastard.I am sorry for the dog, who will inevitably end up on the kill list in a couple of days at the ACC.

not if someone gets off their ass and rescues it.

  • Then join us in advocating and sharing the animals at Urgent over on Facebook. I advocate for these shelter dogs all the time.

    Who's stopping you?

  • dethumps

  • BoogieDown

Feline companions.  They run the show around here.

Also, are you 12? What kind of grownup writes "u"?

  • thank you for fostering our shelter animals
i wish more people adopted and fostered from our shelters.

  • Bluehairedcatlady

Yeah, for "temper" or "kennel cough". Poor dog is doomed now that Emily Tanen is gone.

  • So unfortunately true.

  • If anyone believes this year-old pit bull is the man's disabled wife's "service dog," I've got a very nice bridge I'd like to sell you. When are people going to wake up and realize that not everyone loves their annoying dogs the way they do? If people have a dog, they should walk it and otherwise care for it themselves and not force it on their partners who probably have better things to do that walk around with their nose in a dog's rear end!

  • HypocraticOath

I dont believe it is the service dog at all but I am in the market for a nice bridge...

  • So what's the point of your comment? That it was his wife's dog, and as such it is OK for him to abuse it?

  • LOL @ the headline. I didn't realize this was a "man". Do all men do this? Whoa.

  • This is why poverty continues. In the projects, people shouldn't be allowed to own pets. Project residents are actually lower class than animals anyway, which is why they live in the projects.

  • pokoloco

Really don't see anything wrong with what the man's doing.
A dog's gotta know who's boss, in the wild they learn this through pain as well.
The dog snapped at the owner and you gotta head that off early especially with pittbulls. Free the man and give him his dog back.

  • Did you even watch the video? You are summarizing a delusion that you had. Not facts.
