Weird, Huge Monster In East River Apparently A Sturgeon

Ready for a bagel and schmear

In a situation that immediately calls to mind the great Montauk Monster fiasco of 2008, a giant, prehistoric-looking monster from another world was dragged out of the East River over the weekend. Anybody hungry?

Apparently, the seven foot-long, two foot-wide, scale-covered and generally terrifying creature, which was hauled ashore near the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge, is an Atlantic sturgeon, according to experts from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. And you know what you can do with sturgeon? Just take it down to Barney "The Sturgeon King" Greengrass, who serves it sandwich-style, with cream cheese on a bagel. (Actually, on second thought, maybe don't.)

Anyhow, the catch isn't the only thing to come out of the East River: and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimated that at one point there were some 9,500 sturgeon in the Hudson, and less scary-looking fish have been known to pop up, too.

"estimated that at one point there were some 9,500 sturgeon in the Hudson"

That ancient-sounding "at one point," lest anyone be confused, was 1995. It's also worth noting that was the estimated number of juvenile Atlantic sturgeon, not those of all ages and not all sturgeon as that sentence as written implies. There's a second type, generally smaller, known as the shortnose sturgeon; they're also present in the Hudson.
