The Hasidic community in South Williamsburg has been very vocal about scofflaw cyclists blowing by school buses picking up and discharging children, but a new video shows it's not just bike riders acting like jerks. The video, shot with a helmet camera, shows a Hasidic school bus driver nearly running a cyclist off the road, and when the cyclist confronts the driver, he's asked, "Do you stop for bus signs?" The cyclists says yes, at which point the driver apologizes. But hey—when in doubt, assume all cyclists are "jerks" and crush them like bugs, right? (We're guessing this driver's a Gothamist commenter in his spare time.)
The cyclist who sent us this video adds, "I bicycle through Williamsburg every morning with a camera mounted on my helmet. The Hasidics complain that cyclists are menaces; but I have footage showing the contrary. They overlook the fact that they blatantly disobey traffic laws and place the blame on others who share the road with them. Instead of blaming cyclists, the authorities should crack down on the poor driving habits of the hassidic [sic] community." We're sure they'll get right on that... after their pizza break.

It's dangerous to ride up between a bus, truck, large vehicle and the sidewalk. If the large vehicle passes you, it's better to pass it on its left.

Take a ride down Lee Avenue in Williamsburg and see how many of these high functioning retards drive up the parking spaces and try to cut people off. They obviously don't give a crap about themselves, so why would they give a crap about others, hence LOOK AT ALL THE DENTS IN THEIR MINI VANS! You show my a Minivan driven by a Hasidic person more than 3 months old, send me a pic with documentation of the owner, I will send you a check for $500. WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Would have been nice if he plowed the jaywalkers at the 2:13 point. I got one walking in the bike lanes about a year ago. It was fabulous. If you are breaking the law, you have no recourse.....

These Hasidic School Bus drivers run every dawn stop sign they come on.

The Hasidic Community has some f'n nerve complaining about cyclist that break the law! If you look at their minivans, proof positive of their inability to drive like humans are the major dents on all four sides.
This sexual deviants never signal on turns, lane changes, or pulling in or out of parking spaces.

I'm in Brooklyn, the past 20 years I've seen new drivers from 3rd world countries get licenses. Their driving is horrendous. No one follows the laws. Keep up the work with the cameras. Unfortunately It's going to take someone to be killed by a reckless driver to get some decent laws passed.

It's funny that you think bad driving is dominated by third world immigrants.
Spend time in South Williamsburg, where most all of the groups were born in the US.

the big question is wht are cops too f'ing cowardly to even issue hasids a ticket for any reason?

As a cyclist myself the cyclist here is riding dangerously. I am sick of other cyclists considering it a right to cut ahead of motor vehicles. You should only do so if it is safe.
When learning to drive you are taught to always expect a pedestrian to cross the street, buses open their doors. First and foremost a pedestrian is in the right. If you cannot stop within the visible distance than you are going too fast for the stretch of road.
Many Cyclists need to be taught the basics of defensive cycling and hazard avoidance, many drivers need a refresher.
So you want cyclists to ride in the middle of the road like a car and not pass anyone? Or are they supposed to ride on the side of the road and be passed, but never pass themselves?
Oh but wait... You say they can pass if it is safe... And how does a cyclist determine if it is safe to pass a car/bus? Maybe if it is stopped at a red light and doesn't have any signals on? Ah durr....

Stopped and no signals is only half the story. You missed the points matching your speed to the situation and always expecting a bus door to open. The cyclist stated himself that it was difficult to stop. Thus, 10mph was too fast to be passing the bus which could be dropping off/picking up children at any moment.
Also while riding up the inside, it's easy to forget a vehicles blind spot. It is not always an organized effort to exterminate us.
You do realize HE DID STOP to let the children on the bus. He wasn't going to fast to stop. He said it was HARD to stop.

I will respectfully acknowledge your points but they have not changed my opinion. We will have to agree to disagree.

The cyclist was next to the door, which has windows, and is directly below the mirror that the driver, in theory of course, is looking at.
Passing a vehicle in an open lane is perfectly safe. A bus driver changing lanes without looking or signaling puts all of the fault directly on him.

You may notice that my comments do not mention the actions of the bus driver. They do not try to condone or condemn his behavior. As cyclists we can only be responsible for our own actions. We all know that nyc drivers habits leave a lot to be desired. For that same reason we should always expect them to do anything. At the end of the day keeping ourselves safe.

Looking out for our own safety is a separate issue from drivers' responsibility to drive safely, NYPD's choice of which people on the road to prosecute, and bikers' ongoing efforts to highlight dangerous driving patterns.

a cool panaoramic view of a non hostile engagement between membes of the communty. try a salutation maybe offer a bagel with cream cheese and loche

Or this. It will not defuse the situation, but will certainly make sure the buss driver is no a repeat offender of the driving laws of NY State.

Bus vs Bike. Bus wins-no matter who drives. Ride where the crazy bus drivers aren't. Mounting a helmet cam and whining like Woody Allen isn't gonna solve much...
