Don't let the semi-bright skies fool you! We are catching a short break from the precipitation as a tongue of somewhat drier air is squeezing its way between rain bands. Another round of showers and thunderstorms, some containing heavy rain, should arrive later this afternoon. Since the ground is saturated from all this rain, close to 2.5 inches has been measured in Central Park, a flood watch has been issued for the entire metro area. The Weather Service has also issued a coastal flood advisory for this evening.
The storm responsible for the rain is expected to move northwest from the Carolina coast toward the Appalachians tomorrow. That will keep the city in the rain zone so look out for more showers and thunderstorms and maybe a peak of sun, on Thursday.
Once the storm gets far enough north it will get caught by the jet stream and carried out to sea. As that happens it should warm a bit, tomorrow and Friday should reach 70, and the chance of rain will diminish. Dry air is expected to arrive late Saturday, setting the stage for a potentially sunny and warm Sunday. Don't get too excited, another round of rain will probably arrive on Monday.
