Kids these days. They just don't understand. Back when we were young, we had to walk uphill, barefoot, in the snow, both ways, to get to and from school. And the only thing we had to comfort us on those long, dark days was the sweet sound of the Fab Four, The Beatles. But today, it seems, Macca's honeyed voice is but a distant memory, at least according to this video from the folks behind "I Hate Young People," who polled our nation's youth on the street. What did they discover?
Apart from the kids who confidently assured us that both John Legend and George Michael were members of the band, none of the teenagers could name a Beatles song, album or band member. "There were five of them, right?" asks one girl. "They old rappers?" asks another. Sigh.
Oh, youth. At least Chuck Klosterman understands: "I was initially confused by EMI’s decision to release remastered versions of all 13 albums by the Liverpool pop group Beatles, a 1960s band so obscure that their music is not even available on iTunes. The entire proposition seems like a boondoggle. I mean, who is interested in old music?" [via Stereogum]

For everybody ready to blast young people of color for not knowing who the Beatles are, I humbly suggest that everybody here read 'Nostalgia: a Sport for the Privileged'.
Correction-they're giving YOU a bad name, in your opinion. Life isn't predicated on being a Beatles fan, sister, nor does being an intelligent human being depend on being a Beatles fan, either.
Kids definitely being dumbed down by lax parenting, poor curriculum, over paid union teachers, and relying too much on technology. Sure the Beatles made pop music and you can argue it's now old fashioned with respect to the teens and tweens, but it was GREAT pop music that had lyrical depth and complexity and richness of musical structure. I doubt 50 years from now hundreds of millions of fans will still be buying, discussing and enjoying music of today's crap musicians who seem to be the most famous like Kanye, Jay Z, Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas.

According to an old fogy like you, yes, the kids are dumb, but I say that they are trying to live in the present, and not be constantly trapped in the past like you, looking for any means of escape.
This is a selective survey. There are plenty of kids who listen to The Beatles. I see kids on the subway with Lennon shirts on and there are plenty of teenagers who visit the Lennon memorial. It's also not uncommon for many singers to list The Beatles as influences.

Exactly. I'm more surprised actually how many kids DO know about the Beatles. And not just Lennon. I have a 13 year old daughter and her friends are familiar with songs like Hey Jude (when I played it in the car, they all screamed at the point that Paul screams and did the endless na na na's) and Let it Be and Yellow Submarine and Here Comes the Sun. A lot of kids have seen that horrible Across the Universe movie, and it exposed them to the music. Not a bad thing. There's no reason they should be familiar with all the Beatles songs. And just think, how lucky they will be to eventually discover Revolver and the White Album. I envy them that first experience. But if it never happens, so be it. Culture moves on.

No surprise. Kids today have very limited taste in music and culture in general. If it wasn't recorded in the last 10-15 years, they don't care. And they almost always stick to the same few genres, mostly hip hop or rap with maybe a little punk or alternative. No dinosaur rock for them. None of them would know Bing Crosby or Sinatra, Glenn Miller or Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder. It's a good bet many more of them know Lady Gaga or Britney Spears than even Madonna, Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi. Whitney who-ston? Forget asking about the Village People or the Bee Gees. Many of them have probably never even heard of Elvis.

Counterpoint: Can you name the popular artists of today? If you didn't, would that make you have a "very limited taste in music and culture in general"?

I'm not playing that game. I could provide a list and you'd just accuse me of Googling it. This also proves my point. To you, it's all about you and now. Our tastes stretched out to every decade since the late 18th century and genres you've probably never even heard of. It wasn't just the rock & roll and pop on the radio at the time. And despite what mistermarkdavis assumes, everybody in the 70s could recognize Louis Armstrong, as well as a very good number in the 80s, and we weren't even born in the heart of the boomer generation.

you really couldn't be more wrong. kids today have unprecidented accessto older reccorded music and use it. I've met teenagers that are into early punk, brill building pop, psychadelic rock and just abotu anything you could imagine. Beatles rock band was a top selling video game.
before I sent in my selective services card I probably knew all the words to the songs in tapestry, silk degrees and dozens of songs dating back to the 30s.

Why does the hipster gal "hate The Beatles so much"? What did they do to her?
