Brooklyn Is A Popular Girl's Name Almost Everywhere (Except NY)

2011_05_hipsterbaby.jpg Last week, the Social Security Administration revealed the top baby names of 2010 were Isabella and Jacob, but it turns out the most popular baby names in NY are Isabella and Michael (again). But let's look at the country's #34 girl's name, which happens to be... Brooklyn.

Marty Markowitz would be proud: Brooklyn entered the country's top 50 girl's names in 2008. However, the Brooklyn Beep might be sad to learn the name doesn't actually doesn't show up in the top 100 names for New York. In Alabama, Mississippi and Ohio, Brooklyn is the #16 girl's name, while it's #57 in California, #65 in Georgia, and #14 in Kentucky. The name doesn't chart in the top 100 in New Jersey or Florida or Massachusetts, but it does in Connecticut (#74). It's aslo #24 in Maine, #46 in Texas, and #9 Wyoming. In Arkansas, it's the #11 name and, in Utah, it was the sixth most popular name last year.

The real question is whether these kids will grow up to attend school in New York and, some day, live in trailer park commune or demand bike lanes or volunteer at the Co-op. (Related: Hipster baby names.) You can see popular baby names by state here.

I think I liked it better when most people in places like Ohio didn't know know/care about Brooklyn and would never even consider moving here, let alone naming their child after it.

It would be charitable to give them a tour of Bushwick.

  • At least nobody but really dumb quasi-musicians is naming their kid Bronx.
