Awww: A War Dog Helped Take Out Osama

A war dog, most likely not the one in question, trains in Afghanistan (Wikicommons).

You know what this whole Osama Is Dead story has been missing? A cute animal angle to fawn over. But no longer! See, along with the 79 commandos who raided Osama bin Laden's compound this weekend was a war dog! Yes, along with those Navy Seals was a trusty, heavily-armored, explosive-sniffing pup who, just like the Seals, was lowered into fortified property with an oxygen mask from 25,000 feet in the air.

Dogs have a long history in warfare but we didn't realize they were now being trained to jump from helicopters! Apparently modern war dogs are decked out in ballistic body armor that can take single and double-edged knives. They also are given further protective gear to shield them from shrapnel and gunfire. Further, they are given oxygen masks for helicopter jumps and helmets with videocameras for remote monitoring. Awesome, right?

Enough with the discussion of the photos of Osama's corpse, we want to see photos of the war dog who helped take him out!

I don't think they were at 25,000 feet on this particular mission seeing as how they went by helicopter and were supposed to be avoiding detection by the Pakistanis. And they certainly weren't lowered from that height. That would require five miles of rope per person. The linked article in the Sun says the dogs are trained to be capable of a jump from those heights.
