Now That Osama's Dead, NYC Security Heightened

Authorities have increased security in New York City in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death by U.S. forces. There are more NYPD officers out and about, as there are additional Port Authority police officers and MTA police officers on alert. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told commands, "While there is no information indicating a specific threat to New York City, members of the service are reminded to remain alert in the aftermath." He also issued a public statement, "While we know of no specific plot against New York now underway, the Police Department is not taking any chances." Well, terrorists do love the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Daily News observed, "Anti-terror squads with assault rifles and bomb-sniffing dogs guarded Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station. Cops and agents from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies did random bag inspections at entrances to the sprawling transit system." And the Port Authority is adding more police to the three local airports and to the bridges, such as the George Washington Bridge.

Richard Sheirer, a former NYC Office of Emergency Management head, told WCBS 880 that his "biggest concern" is that we'll become complacent, "you know, say ‘Oh well. Bin Laden’s gone… It’s the end of Al-Qaida.’ I doubt that.”

    Who will ticket the cyclists?

  • anybody catch the national guard terrorism drill that closed half of the port authority on sunday night? i guess we had to "kill" bin Laden so that we could keep having terrorists to thwart... no one has heard much from Al Quaeda in years, so clearly it's time to stir things and wake them up.

Bin Laden at large: heighten security. Bin Laden dead: heighten security. Such is the logic of the global war on terror.

    Well put.

  • diablofreak

you know it had to be done, that he needs to be killed. but i almost wished that he would just die in some hole quietly, just so we don't have to deal with the possibility of retaliation from his death

    well... that was the plan....

    shit, i've said too much.

If I remember correctly aren't we down 5,000 cops since 9/11? Way to go Bloomberg, I really, really hope you don't have to seriously regret that decision.

  • ktinnyc

Yeah, Bloomberg just took all those extra tax dollars and blew it at the track, right?

Maybe if you're brethren would stop raping innocent women the city wouldn't have to pay out all those law suits and could afford a few extra cops.

whoa whoa whoa - what's all this, i thought we were done?!?
