Last Night's Action: Yankees Win Another Home Series

2008_12_yankeeslogo.jpg Yankees 5, Blue Jays 2: Behind the pitching of Ivan Nova and the hitting of Curtis Granderson, the Yankees won yet another series at home. With the win against Toronto, the Yankees haven't lost a series at home yet. Nova pitched into the 7th inning for his second win of the season, allowing two runs, six hits and four walks. Granderson's three-run home run in the 5th inning put the Yankees ahead for the 2nd time in the game — they led after the first inning on a solo home run by Mark Teixeira. Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 9th for his 10th save of the season.

Mets 2, Phillies 1 (14 innings): It took a few extra innings, but the Mets were able to salvage one game in Philadelphia and end their three-game losing streak. The two teams both exchanged one lone run in regulation (in the 5th for the Mets and the 8th for the Phillies). Ronny Paulino (5 for 7 on the night!) doubled in the winning run and Taylor Buchholz got the win after two innings of relief. All told, the two teams used 38 players and the game lasted 4 hours 44 minutes. With the news that Osama bin Laden was dead, crowds at Citizens Bank Park started chanting "USA! USA! USA!" in the top of the 9th inning. The players, who didn't know the news, were momentarily confused. Mets pitcher Pedro Beato, who pitched three scoreless innings in relief, was warming up in the bullpen when the news came across. As a 14 year-old, Beato watched the World Trade Center fall from the roof of Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge.
