Video: Steeplechase Coaster Debuts At Coney Island

Coney Island's Scream Zone is finally open to the masses, which means that their newest roller coaster, the Steeplechase, is up and running. Do you like riding horses? Do you like doing so while strapped to the horse 50 feet in the air? Then do we have a ride for you:

It actually seems pretty tame, though Luna Park insists it goes from zero to 40 mph in two seconds. Still, all that metal and safety inspection will never match the terrifying sensation of the Cyclone swaying and creaking underneath you. Or above you, depending on where you live.

And this is what they think is going to revive Coney Island?

I hope this isn't the $20 ride. Cool tribute, but really not much to it as far as coasters go.

  • The roller coaster in Annie Hall is the Thunderbolt and was next to what is now Steeplechase Park

    Whom Tilly was named after!

If I wanted to grab onto something and sit in a saddle and terrify myself I'd grab my bike, shoot up the west side traffic on my way to bomb down the palisades, and save enough cash off just one ride to score some good dope while I'm at it.

    No thanks.

Way to ignore all that's actually interesting about this ride...

That being that it's a nice tribute to the original Steeplechase park's signature attraction: http://amusingthezillion.files...

For those that may not know, Steeplechase was a park built by the illustrious George Tilyou in 1897, amongst its many attractions (including scale replicas of many world landmarks) was the Parachute Jump that, while in-operational for decades, still stands today and which, until this new coaster came up, was essentially the one remaining reference to the great park.

    That was a roller coaster?
