Amare Stoudemire during Game 3 (AP Celtics 113, Knicks 96: Already down two games to the Celtics in their first round playoff series, the Knicks really needed to win this game. But due to injuries and the play of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo pretty much made a win impossible. For the Knicks and their fans, it was the first playoff game at MSG since 2004. Unfortunately, they're both also waiting for their first playoff win since 2001.
The Celtics jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led by 17 at one point in the first quarter. While the Knicks were able cut the lead to 8 by the end of the first half, Boston outscored New York 34-19 in the 3rd quarter. Pierce scored 38, Allen had 32 and Rondo had a triple double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 20 assists. Shawne Williams led the Knicks in scoring with 17. To win the series, the Knicks will have to make history — no team has ever come back from a three-game deficit to win a series. Maybe they can just avoid the sweep when they play each other again on Sunday.
Mets 4, Diamondbacks 1: A win streak for the Mets! Sure, they've only won two in a row and they've played games against the lesser teams of the National League. But when you're not exactly a powerhouse team, two consecutive wins is pretty good! Mike Pelfrey got his first win of the season, only allowing one run and five hits over 7 innings. That's a big improvement over his first four outings, when Pelfrey never made it out of the 6th inning. The "potent" offense of the Mets was mostly kept in check fo the first six innings, but they came to life with a two-run Ike Davis home run to center field. The Davis hit was originally ruled a double, but after the umpires reviewed the tape, they gave Davis the home run. The Mets added insurance runs in the 8th, adding only two runs despite having bases loaded with no outs. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the 9th for his 3rd save of the season.
