Video: Woman Narrowly Escapes Park Slope Attack

2011_04_psattack.jpg And here we have the harrowing video of a Park Slope woman getting attacked on 16th Street by a man described as "a short, Hispanic man with a stocky build." The video was shot from someone's front stoop surveillance camera, and includes sound, so you can hear the woman's blood-curdling screams of terror as she tries to break free from her assailant's grasp. The only thing that stops this video from being completely disturbing is that she manages to break loose as concerned neighbors emerge from their houses. The video also shows the attacker pulling up his pants as she flees.

The terrifying assault happened around 11:30 p.m. on March 20th (it's unclear what block of 16th Street it happened on), and the assailant is still at large. Susan Gosnell, who witnessed the attack from her apartment across the street, tells the Daily News, "It's horrible. This guy could be out there attacking other women." And Donald Harrington, a construction worker who rushed out of his house in his pajamas when he heard the woman's shrieking, says, "There's nothing heroic about what we did—we were just being good neighbors."

  • Wow. I literally thought I was the only person this happened to. I got carjacked and raped and it was caught on camera and the police did absolutely nothing. Assholes.

  • Ragingsemi

It looks like "The Dude" chased him away.

  • NY1 must have played that video tape at least two dozen times over the weekend and I'm betting that the ratings soared. I am furious. All we needed to know was there was a woman attacked. A still shot of the attempted rapist could have been blown up and shown to viewers. There was only ONE reason that NY1 kept playing and replaying and replaying and replaying this tape. It is shrill, it is something out of Scream 3 - the movie. It has all the things that people (apparently) love to watch when they go to their local cinema. Only this was real. And besides - in my view -- the fact that movies with such gore and violence are only catalysts for real-life re-enactments, I doubly believe that showing and re-showing and re-showing that video was calculated and self-serving. I wish you (Gothamist) had not posted it here as well. What purpose does it serve? I won't say "shame on you" but if I were one of those people who said "shame on you" this would be the perfect time. Jesus. Ratings. Stop it.

"a short, Hispanic man with a stocky build" basically covers narrows it to all of them. Thank God she got away.

  • Is anyone else concerned that it took a month for them to publicize this? I live in this neighborhood and would have liked to have been alerted immediately for my own saftey? Why is this just on the news now?

I used to live in a place where I'd hear screaming all of the time outside of my window. The first 6-7 times, I jumped up in the middle of the night and ran outside with a bat, only to realize it was kids horsing around. After a while, your response gets slower and eventually you just roll over. Not saying that's right, but people need to teach their kids that screaming should be reserved for "I need help." I guess that's why they suggest yelling "FIRE" (as others have noted) when you're being attacked.

  • screaming doesn't always help; you get more of a response if you yell "FIRE!"

and just imagine with all of the DV stories in the news as of late how terrifying this is when these women are attacked by someone they know and love(d) in their own home behind a locked door that neighbors can't get into. the sad truth is people just don't want to get involved. and then when someone is injured or is killed, they say "oh it hasn't sounded too great up there for a couple of weeks..."

What the hell was he trying to do her? Mug her or grope her? The lesson here is SREAM LIKE A BANSHEE!!!

  • Guest

the truth: he was trying to de-humanize her.

  • PSAly

Does anyone know which block this took place on?

  • rchung7

I used to live 3-4 houses down from where this camera is set up. It's 16th Street between 4th and 5th Aves.

  • cmdrogogov

I think the answer here is better, cheaper and more numerous cameras.

  • What I'm really upset about is that this took place on March 20th and now on April 22nd this is posted as news. I've walked alone in this neighborhood late at night since then, but maybe I would have thought twice if I had known this had happened.

  • pun31

Me too. I only found out by picking up the local free paper (Brooklyn News?) and reading the police blotter column. A lot of shady s**t happens near the F that is never reported. Be careful!

  • freddynyc

Anyone actually found her screams to be annoying?

  • pun31

Really, that's your comment? Sorry her scream wasn't more pleasurable for you.

  • TheRealCannibal

    hows your burlap sack collection

  • hashedz

Someone was viewing the vid when I walked into the office this morning. Without knowing what it was I thought they were checking out the Scream 4 trailer.

  • ktinnyc

That's what all the rapist say.

  • Bernie_Geotz_Squirrel_Luv

There's another sexual attacker who only strikes Asian women in Queens who's not caught.
