A Bronx man who was waving around a pellet gun in the middle of a street fight was shot at least ten times by police early this morning. Police instructed Mamadou Valve to put down his weapon, and when he didn't comply, he was hit by bullets in the torso, legs, buttocks and left elbow; he is currently in critical condition at Lincoln Hospital.

Valve, 20, was hanging out at Cocoa House in the Highbridge section of the Bronx around 3 a.m. this morning when a fight broke out and spilled outside the club. "There may have been 100 that left. All of them come running across the street. One of them had a stick from a tree. It was about a yard long," one witness who was working the late shift at Cosmos laundromat across the street from the club told the News. Another reveler had a rock as a weapon, and Valve had his pellet gun.

Police in the area responded to a call for a large disorderly group, and tried to break up the fight. They ordered Valve to put his weapon down, and when he refused, they shot him 18 times, according to NBC. Only ten of the shots hit him, though. Police say that the weapon Valve had was found to be an imitation pistol.

i thank the officers for the missing bullets -- the man is still alive, hurrah!

Who does this guy think he is, 2Pac?

  • newUsername

They should have told him to drop down the toy...

  • BoogieDown

What an idiot. The only thing I could think of that may explain why he didn't lay down the gun is that he may not understand English (that sounds like a Haitian name). This is why it's important to understand at least basic phrases in the language of the majority.

  • The language of the majority is English...

  • BoogieDown

O rly? Thanks for pointing that out. It's not like it was completely implied in my comment.

  • Sorry buddy. The way it was written could be interpreted both ways.

  • jaycjay

Whether someone understands the words being said, there's a pretty clear implication inherent in a bunch of cops pointing guns and yelling at you.

  • BoogieDown

Oh, totally, but I don't think we're talking about the sharpest knife in the drawer here. Some people really seem to have zero instinct for basic survival.

    What a tool shed.

How do you shoot someone 18 times and only hit them 10 times? I think you are missing the word "at".

  • Colonel_Ingus

A pellet gun is still a gun. I have two large holes in me from some shit-assed 16 year old neighbor that showed me when I was a kid. Two large holes from a CO2 pellet gun at close range.

10 for 18.... not too shabby. Good job.

  • Peanut_Butter

which one can reduce to 5 for 9.

  • winning1234

Why the emphasis that it was a pellet gun?

  • Peanut_Butter

Because it looked real. It's a pertinent fact.

  • winning1234

I agree it's a pertinent fact. But my point is the emphasis of the title suggests that the police shot a man with a gun that wasn't real.

8 stray bullets. Way to go NYPD.

  • They should have used their magic heat seeking bullets. Or drawn on the extensive sniper training they get with their enormous budgets.

  • Peanut_Butter

Also, you haven't ruled out the possibility that because they were all accurately aimed, that 2 or more bullets' trajectories coincided and they all bounced off each other, going off on tangents, thus leading to a miss, when they would otherwise have been dead-on.
