Sanitation Truck Crashes Into Car In Brooklyn, Worker Arrested For DWI

Yesterday at 5:20 p.m., a Department of Sanitation worker was arrested for DWI after crashing his loaded garbage truck, head-on, into a car at Bushwick Avenue and Grand Street in East Williamsburg. Images of the wrecked Hyundai are dramatic—the car's driver had to be cut out of the vehicle—and the driver and passenger were hospitalized. According to WABC 7, "Witnesses say the on-duty worker was given a breathalyzer test at the scene and arrested shortly afterwards."

A witness told 1010 WINS, "You heard like a really big bang, like a boom. That’s why everybody ran out and was like ‘oh my goodness. I hope the guy’s okay.’”

The Sanitation worker, reportedly a 30-year-old who has been with the department for seven years, was driving to a garbage transfer station.

I'm surprised that this does not happen more often. They do ~50 mph down Wythe Ave all night, now that it has become an official truck route. Forget about the warehouse area of Bushwick. Vandervoort Ave, anyone? Morgan? Johnson? At least you hear them coming.

A "garbage transfer station" sounds like a building, not something you drive drunk.

Drunk driving should be an automatic 3rd strike felony. Clearly, the deterrent isn't strong enough.
