[UPDATE] Person Fatally Struck By R Train, Service Resumed

041311Rtrain.jpg An MTA spokesman tells us that at 5:20 a.m., a northbound R train "struck a person on the roadbed" at the 4th Avenue and 77th Street R train stop in Brooklyn. The victim is deceased. Currently the MTA says there is "no train service between the Bay Ridge-95th Street Station and the 59th Street Station in both directions." We'll update as we know more.

Update 8:48 a.m.: The MTA says R train service has now resumed, with residual delays.

  • They seriously need a better shuttle bus system. I was waiting at the 77th street stop for a shuttle bus, it took me 40 minutes. They should have sent a few empty shuttles to bypass 86th street - it took another 25 just to get down to 60th street.

I knew that they said that someone had passed, sad. An MTA employee told me it was suicide? Or did the person fall and get hurt? Anyone have an update on what happened?

Thanks for reporting this. There were shuttle buses running at 8AM. MTA was not giving any information as to why. Sad to know someone died.

  • I agree - no one knew what was going on, people were running down in the station to get the train and coming out to tell us what was going on. If this incident happened at 530 AM and I get to the train at 710 - call me crazy but isn't that enough time to put up a sign or that little piece of red tape across the stairs?

  • I'm glad someone had some information on this, since NY1 barely said anything as usual.

  • I went down to the station at 8:30am and there was a woman laying on the platform with what looked like head trauma from maybe falling down the stairs....my station seems to have been cursed this morning :(

  • I got to the 69th Street stop and saw tons of people waiting for the B9 bus and then they all piled in. The subway shuttles were running towards 95th Street but nothing going towards Manhattan. I got lucky and got a livery driver to give me a discount to take me to work. I thought that was the silver lining. I just hope it is not anyone I know :(

Luckily at 5:30am there weren't that many people.

  • Ha! The train was closed from 5:30 to 8:50... there were plenty of people!!

I figured as much when I saw numerous firetrucks heading that way this morning and got the "police investigation" MTA alert.
