Police Arrest Suspect In 2009 Grandmother Murder

Nearly two years ago, 87-year-old Anna Surman was gunned down by a stray bullet in the courtyard of her apartment at the Surfside Houses in Coney Island. Yesterday, police finally arrested the ex-con who they believe fired the fatal shot. "I didn’t think they were ever going to catch this guy. I hope he spends the rest of his life in jail. He took her life," said the victim’s grandson, Michael Surman.

Malcolm Mitchell, 26, was arrested by police for shooting a gang rival in the left leg on Thursday. Police then connected him to the August 2nd, 2009 murder of Surman. Surman was shot in the neck and killed when a man fired three shots from a 9-mm. pistol during a foot chase. Mitchell has a long criminal record that goes back to 2002, including assault, gang assault, burglary and grand larceny. He's now been charged with murder and attempted murder.

"I want to see him in court. I want to see the face of the man that killed my grandmother. Let him have his fair trial. This is America. I hope he spends the rest of his life in jail," Surman's grandson told the News.

Gotta agree with you. The Post article is the definitive source, starting with their calling the suspect a gangbanger, Truly unbiased reporting that's based on....hmmm,whatever the cops tell them?

And for the record, among his convictions are those for Gang Assault. So yeah - gangbanger.

You never know with cops. They use the last suspect caught to clear up cold cases. If he is indeed this woman's killer give him hell. If he's just the most convenient guy, then have pity on him because whether he's guilty or not isn't going to be important.
