Last Night's Action: A Great Start

New York Yankees Russell Martin, (55) and Derek Jeter, center, greet Mark Teixeira after Teixeira's, third inning three-run home run (AP)
Yankees 6 Detroit 3: A lot of good things happened for the Yankees in this game besides the win. Start with Mark Teixeira getting off to a good start with a three-run home run. Add a Curtis Granderson homer off of a lefty, plus three great defensive plays. Mix in a perfect 7th, 8th and 9th from the bullpen trio of Joba, Soriano and Rivera and you have a very happy home crowd despite the miserable weather. The Yankees and Tigers will meet again Saturday.

Islanders 6 Rangers 2
: A sickening hit and dirty hit by Marian Gaborik to Frans Nielsen jumpstarted the Islanders and put the Rangers' playoff hopes in peril. Nielsen appeared to be knocked out and he did not return to the game. The hit sparked the Isles as they roared back from a 1-0 deficit to score six-straight and the game descended into chaos. The third period alone saw almost 100 minutes of penalties handed out and both teams should expect to hear from the NHL on Friday.

"A sickening hit and dirty hit"

Seriously, I have to wonder anyone who would characterize that play that way has ever seen a hockey game before. It wasn't a hard hit, clearly wasn't an intent to injure, and happened mostly as a result of bad timing/bad luck as Nielsen turned and lowered his head to play the puck while not seeing Gaborik approaching. Gaborik's anything but a physical player. This is just the kind of play that happens in hockey. Yeah, those boards are hard. Sometimes guys will be checked into them.

It is surprising that someone as brittle as Gaborik didn't injure himself while boarding Nielsen. I didn't care for brain damaged Jeremy Roenick's assessment of the hit during intermission.
