Schumer Suspicious Of Census Count Results

032711census.jpg Recount! According to the 2010 Census data, New York's population grew by just 166,855 over the past decade to 8.175 million. But a previous Census estimate put the city's population at 8.3 million, and Senator Chuck Schumer thinks someone fudged the numbers. "These numbers cry out for investigation," he said. "I'm going to put a lot of pressure on them to do it. For the census director to just shrug his shoulders ... isn't good enough."

Bloomberg has already spoken out about the numbers, saying, "I’m not criticizing them, but it doesn’t make any sense." And Marty Markowitz said, "I’m flabbergasted, I know they made a big, big mistake." The state has already lost two House seats, and Schumer says the low numbers could keep the city from getting the federal aid we need. And besides, we need to figure out who these people living in Central Park are.

If you add in the illegal immigrants, I'm sure that number would go up by a couple of million.

When taking the national population increase into account, NYC lost people. Schumer's extra 125,000 people wont change that.

I'm a little dubious about the count for Astoria, particularly Western Astoria. Construction of new housing has been going on for over 20 years, replacing private homes or smaller apartment buildings. Unless the newly constructed housing has remained empty for years, the population must have increased, not decreased. Something is definitely not right here.
