Last Night's Action: On the Pitch, It's Two Draws

2011_03_usmntarg.jpg United States 1, Argentina 1: On a night with weather more fitting for American football, the New Meadowlands welcomed the international game of football. For the second time in less than a year, the United States Men's National Team played an international friendly at the new stadium. While the USMNT lost to Brazil 2-0 in August, they were able to force a draw last night against Argentina, ranked 4th in FIFA's world rankings. Lionel Messi, the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, dazzled the crowd in the first half and helped set up Argentina's goal in the first half. Juan Agudelo, a member of the Red Bulls, scored the equalizer for the United States off a rebound on a set piece.

Red Bulls 0, Crew 0: Missing five members of its team, including four starters from last week, the Red Bulls were fortunate enough to walk away with a draw. Tim Ream and Juan Agudelo weren't with their teammates in Columbus, but were with the US Men's National Team instead.

Bobcats 114, Knicks 106: Surprise! The Knicks lose again! Who knows what's going on with them, but the loss to the Charlotte was their 6th straight loss. Carmelo Anthony was able to score 36, but Amare Stoudemire only contributed 14 points in the loss. While the Knicks still hold onto the 7th playoff spot in the East, things are looking tenuous. They lead the 8th place Pacers by 3.5 games and the Bobcats are 4.5 behind, on the outside looking in. But the way the Knicks are playing, they could very well be the ones packing their equipment up at the end of the season.

Hawks 98, Nets 87: The Nets were able to start the game with a 2-0 lead, but Atlanta then scored the next 19 points. Probably not the best way to start off the game. The Hawks clinched a spot in the playoffs with the win.

Rangers 1, Bruins 0: Well, at least one team that plays at MSG is doing well. The Rangers, who have won six of their last seven, won behind Henrik Lundqvist's shutout performance in the net and strong defense. The lone goal in the game came in the 1st period when Derek Stepan deflected a shot from the stick of Michael Sauer. The shutout was Lundqvist's 11th of the season, a NHL best.

Sabres 2, Devils 0: The chances that the Devils make the playoffs aren't looking so good right now. The devils are in 12th place and with the loss are now 12 points behind Buffalo for the last playoff spot with seven games to go. The Devils could miss the playoffs for the first time since 95-96.

Flyers 4, Islanders 1: James van Riemsdyk could scored enough for the Islanders that they had no problem defeating the Isles. Van Riemsdyk had a hat trick for Philadelphia with two goals in the 1st and then another in the 3rd.
