Teen Chased, Killed Over Marmot Mammoth Coat

Victim Malik Jenkins
Three suspects from the Bronx have been indicted for murder after an 18-year-old was struck by two cars trying to run away from them. Malik Jenkins, 18, was wearing a $600 Marmot Mammoth jacket when he and a friend were "lured" to the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Houses by 15-year-old April Brooks and her cousin, 17-year-old Jasmine Castrillo. Once there, they were confronted by four men, who stole his friend's $150 True Religion jacket.

The four men reportedly tried to rob Jenkins too, but he broke free and ran off across Bruckner Boulevard, where he was struck by two cars and killed. It's unclear why three suspects have been charged when there were four men attempting to rob him, but Jenkins's mother said, It's horrible that any mother should have to go through what I'm going through for a piece of material. I hope [the suspects] get exactly what they deserve and justice prevails." However, Castrillo's lawyer said they will have "a tough time proving my client is involved with this." Marmot Mammoth jackets, known as "Biggies," are popular on Craigslist, and many listings ask for Foamposite sneaker trades.

What about the two skanks that obviously were the bait for the robbers? Shouldn't they get charged as well? This was obviously a setup.

  • BoogieDown

Jasmine Castrillo's lawyer is quoted here, so I'm guessing she's being charged with something. Don't know what though as the writing in this piece is a bit confusing.

  • Victim blaming? Check.
Jealous that he had $600 to buy a coat? Check.
References to being "a ghetto hood rat"? Double Check.

A young man was lured and for want of his coat was chased and killed. If you're on a computer right now reading this, you had $600+ dollars of "disposable income" to buy it..and who's to judge you that you really needed it?

As a side note: I wonder those who are quick to call people "ghetto" and make other racist comments would have the guts to say it to my face, IRL?

  • BoogieDown

I've been kind of following this story since it happened as I live nearby and witnessed the aftermath of him being hit by the cars. At the time of his death, it was reported that he was a solid HS student and I believe he'd either been accepted to a couple of colleges or was in the process of applying (sorry, my memory is a bit hazy as he was killed a while ago now). So, yeah, he wasn't a bad kid. Sadly, not long before Malik Jenkins was killed, another decent kid with a bright future was murdered nearby in broad daylight by some thug over a stare (I kid you not).

While many people who meet a violent end find themselves in that situation because of stupid choices, some are just the victims of envy and jealousy. Really sad.

he should've handed the coat over and he'd be alive. it apparently wasn't even his own coat. but we are taught to want material things and show them off. call it victim blaming, but i know that if i'm being mugged, i hand everything over and let them go on their way. nothing, not even a jacket, is worth losing your life over.

  • You're right about one thing...you are a hypocrite.

If you're going to put out theories of a victim of a crime, how about this:

His mother, after working long hours working 2 jobs, received a large tax refund. Her son, after volunteering with other young people and graduating with a perfect 4.0 requested only one thing: a designer coat. His mother, knowing that he doesn't ask for much anyway, buys him a coat, 2nd hand, glad to get a deal for her son.

We don't need anyone else assuming the worst...people like YOU do a fine job of it all by yourself!

As a mother of a teenager, I know not ALL teenagers are just shiftless, lazy wannabe criminals. If you ever get up out of the "ghetto" long enough, maybe you'll see that instead of spending time congratulating yourself for being an honorable poor person.

  • GregJG

    Well written Shhhhh.

  • blkisstillnewprez

yes, GregJG, you're extremely open-minded and not a bigot at all, based on your comments in the post about apple pulling the "gay cure" app. you're not a hypocrite, nope.

  • blkisstillnewprez

i'm glad your teenager isn't a "shiftless, lazy wannabe criminal" - speaks to your abilities as a parent to steer your child in the right direction. sadly, not all parents are like you. and not all children are like your teenager.

i don't congratulate myself for being an honorable poor person, but i do value that i'm an honorable person and i appreciate and admire honorable people. i apologize on behalf of myself and all of the other "ghetto" and "poor" people who apparently offend your tiger mama sensibilities. entitled minorities are so hot right now.

  • Steve10003

I agree, nine posts and not one thought for the victim. Too bad, he's a nice looking kid. My thoughts to the family.

  • whitecastlerock

I called them assholes for robbing their neighbor-fuck them. No one deserves to die over a fucking coat...

  • whitecastlerock

go to old navy to buy a coat like the rest of the poor slobs-don't rob your neighbors-fucking assholes

  • broke ass thieves..they should be prosecuted....they should have gone to a bank or a shopping mall...

  • blindmalice

And how did Malik come up w/ 600.00 to buy the coat? He must have had a really good income.

  • blkisstillnewprez

yeah, it's always odd how folks who bust their asses working have to count pennies and think twice before buying a $100 winter coat from a discount store, but yet this 18 y.o. kid had the disposable income to purchase a $600 jacket. shit, i don't even have $150 to buy myself a true religion jacket! these are the same folks you see at Costco buying the entire 3D TV set, the ipods, the laptops, speakers, whatever and pay CASH -- meanwhile I making sure I got the minute maid o.j. because i can't afford to pay for the organic kind.

  • NICHOLAS JOHNSON

Tryna figure out why you're worried about why and how we had a $600 jacket. That's really irrelevant...Sounds that you are envious that you can't afford such an expensive item, but check it...You still have your life...Did it cross your mind that his parents may earn a nice paycheck, and there 18 yr old  just graduated from high school and wanted to give him whatever gift he wanted...this may not be the case, but really doesn't matter...think before you say something ignorant...you'll look smarter...smh

  • While I'm relieved to see it's not made out of actual marmots, who the hell pays $600 for a puffy coat?

  • Bernie_Geotz_Squirrel_Luv

So that's why I see them on CL. another reason why CL is bad news.

  • Those silly Yo's and their silly possessions.
