About That Rebecca Black Video

New York City (or a fake backdrop of it) makes a cameo in Rebecca Black's new video, so there you go, we can weigh in on it! First of all, for those of you wondering "Who the fuck is Rebecca Black?" please refer to this NME article titled "Who the fuck is Rebecca Black?" The 13-year-old's video for her song "Friday" recently went viral because it is the worst video ever made, ever. (The Hairpin calls it an "awk-fest.") You can watch the tweenage trainwreck below, and sing-a-long to lyrics like, "Today is Friday, Tomorrow is Saturday, And Sunday comes afterwards."

Since the video debuted Black has been cyber-bullied by just about everyone. She appeared on GMA last week defending her "talent," at which time she asked Justin Bieber, her idol, to do a duet with her. Today OK! Magazine points out that Bieber may have responded via Twitter over the weekend, while taking a jab at her song lyrics (he Twote: "'sunday comes after saturday?' weird.”) This coming from the boy who wrote, "And I was like Baby, baby, baby ohhh."

For better or worse, she's now got millions and millions more YouTube views than Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way."

  • People are not attacking a girl cause she sucks.. that is partly true.. but because she is just another teen pop wanabe trying to get famous. using HER PARENTS money.. the internet isnt perfect.. but it has its goods.. when a bully kid gets body slammed.. thousands rally to support.... but when you b.s .. to get into the internet.. then expect some back-lash.

I'm with magokazan-- this overblown reaction to this video is more a reflection on internet culture than it is on Rebecca Black's singing abilities, or lack thereof. When I first heard about this latest meme, I decided to watch the video and went into it expecting it to be as crude as "What What in the Butt" or "Chocolate Rain." But all I saw was this innocuous Bubble Gum song that sounded no different than a lot of Top 40 stuff, especially music geared towards kids in Black's age group.

I couldn't believe it. *This* was the horrible song that everyone was ranting about? This was the worst song ever? Really? What about Souljah Boy, Hollaback Girl, or My Humps? What about those? And how was "Friday" any different than stuff like Aerosmith's "Pink" ("Pink it´s like red but not quite "), Aqua's "Barbie Girl", I'm Blue (Da Ba Dee), or Yummy Yummy Yummy from the 60s?

So to see this reaction, it kinda makes the internet look foolish, like it's nothing more than a culture of cyberbullies, haters, and meme addicts so desperate to taunt others or find the latest "Dramatic Chipmunk" that they're using "anything"--no matter how inappropriate-- as fodder. It kinda reminds me how after the whole "2 Girls 1 Cup/ BME Pain Olympics/ 2 Girls 1 Finger" phenomenon ended, people tried starting it up again with "3 Guys 1 Hammer". They didn't care how inappropriate this footage was, they were going to "find anything" to get the whole thing going, even if it was of a guy getting brutally murdered on camera. Because that's how obsessed they were.

This latest Rebecca Black phenomenon amounts to the same thing. There's just nothing about the song and video IMO that warrants the type of reaction I'm seeing; it really seems to me like people desperate to find another meme to get excited about or another Chris Crocker to hate.

    i agree with you 100%.

it's disgusting that people are attacking this poor girl because she made a video. what is sad is that it is no longer internet culture, this mentality has spread to mainstream media desperate to not get left behind so they report on this viral nonsense.

the news story shouldn't be that her song is bad, the news story should be that adults are bullying a 13 year old girl.

    uh, welcome to the internet?

  • aspiringrapper

She's 13 & she's hanging out with people old enough to drive?

  • Unkle_Bob

You've never heard of older siblings?

  • aspiringrapper

Right, because the lyrics & imagery clearly imply she's hanging out with her brothers & sisters on a Friday night....

  • Gwinny

Yes, this was one of my takeaways as well... not to mention the creepy older rapping guy. Fun, fun, fun fun....oh dear god.

  • Conan O'Brien also debuted his cover "Thursday":

Well, its still better than the black eyed peas.

  • Unkle_Bob

Am I the only one impressed that 13 year olds can create videos like this? Forget the singing, the video editing is better than what many NYFA students could do.

  • colonelcasey

It was done by an agency...that's why it looks "professional"

  • Unkle_Bob

Ah. Very well then. It's a POS.

  • angry_pickle

I see my quaaaaack! kicking in the front seat, quack, quack, kicking in the back seat, quaaaack!

  • magokazan

This just proves the point the Internet is full of bullies. These "f-word" comments directed at a 13 year old by people such a m015094 who have neither voice nor talent are only possible by the anonymous nature of the Internet. Hide behind anonymity all u want, Rebecca is laughing all the way to the bank.

  • unretrofiedforu

Internet tip #45: 'viral' doesn't necessarily mean 'successful'.

  • J_Temperance

it's in the top 20 iTunes purchases, they're probably going to make in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

  • robingee

What bank? She's a product of Ark Music Factory, who has about a dozen random teenage girls on their roster. Parents pay a few thou so Princess can have a song and a video. It's like the new Super Sweet 16. The producers are ones getting paid. By mum and dad.

  • actually quite of bit of bank, they paid about$2000 dollars to retain full rights to the song.
    http://articles.ocregister.com...
"...Ark also said the family could opt not to pay anything in exchange for giving up all rights to the song."

  • robingee

Well, if someone is happy making a little money by being a total joke, that is their thing. All of the other terrible children on that "label" will probably not enjoy such dubious success.
