There's a lot of obnoxious behavior we have to put up with in the subway: the fingernail clipping, the rats in the mouth, the masturbating. It can also be revolting when someone fills the subway car with the stench of their McDonald's or Chinese food. But of all the foods to make a stand over, is spaghetti really pungent enough to fight for/against? NYC the Blog found this video of a recent subway fight on YouTube. In the right corner, a young woman eating pasta. In the left corner, a disgusted passenger who asks aloud, "What kind of animals eat on the train like that?" Oh yes she didn't.
If you want to cut to the chase, things start to get physical around the two minute mark. There's some posturing, then some slapping and hitting, then a Good Samaritan breaks it up and lectures the aggressors. Sadly, the spaghetti is lost in the scuffle. SPOILER ALERT: Nobody cleans it up.
Neither the transit police nor the MTA were notified of the incident, but an MTA spokesperson tells us, "Although food is not prohibited on the subway, we periodically issue public service campaigns to ask customers to avoid doing so in order to help us control insects and other pests." Clearly, the MTA has their next PSA right here—and it comes with a ready-made slogan: "What kind of animals eat on the train like that?"

Did the older woman ever consider the fact that the girl probably didn't have time to catch breakfast at home and this was just a chance to grab a bite before her day began?? This name-calling was out of line and completely unnecessary. She INITIATED this altercation by beginning to harass an innocent bystander who hadn't done anything except eat. Was this older woman a sensitive tourist? BOTH my parents were from NYC and I grew up constantly going on trips to the city. You don't know how many times I've seen people munch something on the train. I've done it myself, grabbing a bite on the run and eating a hamburger or something on the train. There's nothing out of bounds about it and I've never been name-called. The woman who provoked everything needs to get a damn life!
It looked like the older woman was responding to that black guy - at the beginning of the video she answers him - "because they're idiots" - it sounded like he made an insulting remark and she agreed with him. She then took it too far by calling them animals, but they also took it too far by calling her fat. Oh well. It looks to me like everyone was at fault.
I''m a life long NY'er and have ridden the subways since I could first walk. I've seen and smelled many a people having a bite while riding, but I never thought anything of it. Bottom line people.....WHO GIVES A FUCK?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This dumb bitch was across from the culprit and all she could fucking do was bitch bitch and bitch some more.
and why?....Because some chick was fucking hungry and decided to eat?
That fat sloppy bitty got what she deserved! Next time mind your fucking business instead!
no joke how do we know she wasn't on the way to work or between shifts just trying to eat nobody knows. hell it is not ghetto to be hungry or eat and lots worse crap goes on in the subway everyday why did the fat old lady presume to thnk it was any of her business what the girl was doing she paid to be there and wasn"t hurting a thing spaghetti probably made the place smell better. A lot of you people seem really racist what would you have said if it was a white girl carb loading before a marathon? What if the old bag farted would that be an assault charge? and no I am not black but not ignorant as so manyof you seem to be. live and let live

And sadlky, based on how most people sem nowadays, I congratulate the guy for trying to break it up and not just egging them on. seems like one of those things were you shouldnt have to congratulate someone for doing the right thing, but it's so rare nowadays

the two gilrs were rude, in eating in the subway and for the one not eating, she was rude by escalating the situation. The older woman was both stupid and rude for getting all confrontational about it. The younmger girls really acted like impulse-control chalenged trash though in trying to start with an older lady, no matter how rude she was. Basically: be mindful of your fellow humans by not eating smelly stuff in enclosed public places, be mindful by not being a nudgy idiot, and don't fight over dumb stuff

i think the moral might be shut up, unless you know how to thrown down...especially on the train.
I don't see how its possible to have an appetite on the subway mostly because of of Bloomberg's fat exploding from soda ads.

Thank you ladies and gentlemen for the daily dose of latent racism. Stay real, Gothamist.

WHEN YOU SAID "RACISM " DID YOU FEEL BETTER ?BECAUSE I DON'T UNDERSTAND EVERYBODY LIKES TO SAY THAT WORD I DO NOT KNOW, WHY?

YES,UNFORTUNATELY IN NOW DAYS WE DON'T KNOW WHAT IS "IF YOU GET BEAT LEFT CHEEK TURN THE OTHER CHEEK".WE SO EASY ALLOWED OURSELVES TO EXPLODE AND FIGHT,ALLOWED OUR ANGER TO EAT US FROM INSIDE .JUST IMAGINE FOR A SECOND IF THE ANSWER WAS "YES, MISS EVEN YOU CALL ME AN ANIMAL I WILL PUT MY FOOD AWAY OR CHANGE A SIT SO IT IS NOT GOING TO DISTURB YOU.THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE OUR WORLD BETTER,OTHERWISE OUR BAD ENERGY WILL DESTROYED HOLE WORLD.
The food might have been smelly but it doesn't seem like the girl eating it was being rude or unclean. The woman who chose to say "only animals eat like that on the subway" is the one that is the antagonist, not the girl with the food. Yea, maybe you shouldn't eat in the subway, and I've smelled some smelly bad and smelly good food, but really, deciding to call someone an animal in that smarmy, holier than thou voice that lady uses... come on. Those are fighting words and attitude.
It shouldn't have escalated like it did, that's for sure, but it's New York. You say crap like that to anybody and you have to expect to get into it.

most african american people in nyc are rude and self-important. they think the whole world owes them something and consequently are rude and nasty to everyone else.
i have several west african friends who drive livery cars and cabs and they HATE picking up black (i mean african-american, not african) people. why? because black people are rude, loud, cheap - i mean BLACK PEOPLE NEVER TIP - and usually don't clean up after themselves. they think that the "help" will do it for them,
it is not surprising that these black - not african - women think that eating on the subway is not like an animal bending down over some pile of food. they could eat at home, maybe wait. or even cook at home, but no they eat on the train and make a mess. and the rest of us have to live with their mess that they make. it is disgusting.
my friend was a waiter at a restaurant - TGIF - and they hated to serve black people because they never tipped and left big messes. in fact, the black waiters hated to serve their own.
"because black people are rude, loud, cheap - i mean BLACK PEOPLE NEVER TIP - and usually don't clean up after themselves. they think that the "help" will do it for them,"
That's interesting, agrohene. Because my mother is African-American, a native New Yorker and she is an EXCELLENT tipper. I remember an evening where we ate at a restaurant in the lobby of our NY hotel we were staying at. The waitress, who was white, was rude, tacky in behavior, and offensive because she did not want to address my mother when we ordered. At the end of the meal, my mom left a $10 tip. She took the HIGHER road. Whenever we've eaten out, I've always seen her leave extremely generous tips. Please don't launch your offensive generalizations against all Black new yorkers because I and other people can easily prove you wrong.
Generalization. I'm black. I tip. I'm clean. I don't eat on subways. Not in France, Italy, Greece, New York or D.C. Your whole philosophy just went up in flames.
"Most" is still too strong of a generalization, because "most" of my friends are just like me in that respect.
Your best bet is to be specific and say "Most, uneducated, black people who grow up in poverty without proper etiquette training..."
The women deserved it, sorry. We have Freedom of Speech, yet expect the consequences that come with it. She intentionally provoked a fight by calling them animals. It was not her place to condemn them.

Oh, I see--so people should never be taken to task for their obnoxious behavior? When you're taking public transportation, you're riding with the PUBLIC--i.e., OTHER PEOPLE. If you've been raised to be considerate of other people in public places, you try your best not to do things that--although they may satisfy YOUR immediate needs--could easily bother a lot of the other people around you. However, if you HAVEN'T been raised to be considerate to other people in public places, then you eat spaghetti on the train....
