Big Brooklyn Night Bazaar Bringing Summer Fun to Waterfront

If funky attorney Aaron Broudo has his way, hipster Greenpoint is going to be a major party and shopping destination for alt New Yorkers this summer. In a 100,000 square foot waterfront space that used to be a lumber yard, Broudo plans to install an open-air "Brooklyn Night Bazaar" with a large scale (local) beer and wine garden, nightly performances from "emerging bands," and large scale art installations. "We're hoping to be zany about the type of stuff that happens and provide a forum for really exciting artistic things to happen on the site," Broudo tells us. But first, he needs money, man.

Through Kickstarter, Broudo has already raised over $5,500 in seed money for the project, but he's still short of his $7,000 goal, which must be reached by Monday in order for the funds to go through. Broudo says he's in the process of getting all the necessary permits, and he's meeting with the 94th precinct today. So if it all comes together, the bazaar would be open from June to October on Fridays and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. With any luck, the Greenpoint ferry service will be up and running by then.

"The inspiration came from my days backpacking in southeast Asia where these late night markets are prevalent," Broudo says. "It was a really fun part of my travels. I wanted to bring some of that back to Brooklyn, especially considering some of the creative vendors we have here. I also grew up in Vancouver which has a really excellent outdoor night market." To help, he's assembled "a crew of people that have a lot of experience with nightlife and things of that nature," including concerts at Randall's Island. So if you want to party on the East River until 2 a.m. this summer and stumble home with a tote bag full of artisanal wares that will mystify you in the morning, kick a few bucks Broudo's way. Or tell us what you think about "hipsters" in the comments!

Real hipsters would only provide bicycle parking. Broudo is obviously an in-the-closet capitalist.

  • this. sounds. fantastic. Broudo, you're a hipster diety.

There is parking included in the plan? The auto-phobes are going to go postal!
