Black victims made up 60% of the murders reported last year. Further, a third of all of the 536 murder victims in 2010 were black males between the ages of 15 and 29 (a group that represents only three percent of the city's total population).
Other interesting facts gleaned from the depressing report (which you can read below) include:
42% of the murders in 2010 occurred in Brooklyn.
17% of murder victims in 2010 were female.
Of those women murdered 21% were killed with a firearm. The number for men was 74%. And for blacks men between 16 and 21 the figure was nearly 90%!
More then 75% of all murder victims had prior arrests (with half of them having drug charges against them and a quarter of them either on parole or probation at the time of their death)
60% of female murder victims, however, had no prior arrest records.
In other crime statistic news, according to the NYPD's latest CompStat report, murders are down this year by 21% with 54 reported through the end of February.
while i'm not sure what's at play, i can speculate. during a recession or tough economy/job market, the less established (read "less privileged") are going to feel the negative effects first. because jobs are scarce, many have probably felt like they have no choice but to participate in the "underground economy", ie. "street business" and that's where disputes get settled violently, hence the increased murder rate among a very specific demographic. this increase stays compartmentalized because of the nature of the milieu in which they occur. we're not talking about random crime.

Whats the purpose of these statistics? To show us what we already know, or to help the people understand why the NYPD "fucks up" when it comes to the innocent black people?
However I would like to know if this is good or bad, because 75% of the victims were criminals themselves. All that means to me is that we DO have a death penalty here in NY, at least for some people.
See, that does absolutely nothing to foster unity in our society.

Did it ever occur to you that not every non-white person wants unity? The biggest - or at least most overt - racists I've ever met have been black.
GregJG
American history is a bitch isn't it? Excuse the black man for lashing out against some very privileged folks who do not feel the brunt of a hard life. Growing up poor and white in America has it's hardships to. I'm not ignorant to that. Yes Sir we all can seek the light to escape the darkness and many have but please don't tell me about black folks and racism. Quite funny when you tear it apart and look at it.
Jamie_McDonald
Oh, I see, so: making assumptions based solely and entirely on the color of another's person's skin and then "lashing out" at that person is okay for one group, but not for another. Well, looks like I will indeed not have to tell anyone "about black folks and racism," because you've just done it for me.
GregJG
You absolutely will not base a point off of that reply. Racism is part of man and at the same time so is love. My post wasn't to promote racism and fist pump for one side. My post to you Sir as a man of Caucasian descent is to heed the past before passing judgement on today. For a white man to say a black man is racist is funny. [Black man can of course be that way]. The old saying of the pot calling the kettle black comes to mind. You cannot treat a race of people like ground beneath shit even to this day and expect a pat on the back and everything is alright. At the same time it's not your fault good Sir since the black man seems to be stuck in a loop of deceit he needs to pull himself away from.

"For a white man to say a black man is racist is funny. [Black man can of course be that way]."
Why is it funny for someone to say something you yourself say is true? Isn't the truth the truth regardless of the skin color of the person saying it?

Interesting, I can't say I've had the same experiences, so I'm curious to hear you elaborate on that.
Keep in mind, racism, both on its face and in function, is about power dynamics and out-grouping more than anything else.
I am interested to hear though. Explain.
Jamie_McDonald
For example, I used to live in a black neighborhood, and hearing both overt and coded racial slurs directed right at me was common. At one point I was very obviously singled out for a mugging because of my race. I'm not trying to hold myself out as a victim - I really don't care if someone calls me a cracker or whatever - but let's not pretend that racism can only be practiced by white people.
As for "power dynamics" etc., whatever truth there is to that, you can't use that as an excuse to hold one group of people to one standard of conduct and a different one to another.
Jamie_McDonald
I mean, just look at this very thread. If a white person was talking about demographics in the language of dominance and supremacy, like QWED did above, would you just respond with something lily-livered about "unity"? Judging by the usual tenor of your posts, I doubt that very much.

So this is why they took down that "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb" billboard... That billboard was a lie!
I bow to your formidable understanding of urban planning and the relative cost and subsides of various forms of transportation. Say, you're not by any chance married to Chuck Schumer are you?

Looks like a push for murder's by race. Asian suspects =3% to asians murdered =3%. white suspects = 4% murdered = 6%. except for hispanics whom are suspects in 32% of murders but only account for 24% murdered. black suspects = 61% murdered = 67%.So most people murder within their race except for hispanics who will kill anybody. Blacks make up 25% of the NY population but account for more than 61% of all murders. AL sharpton, Rangel, where you at?
m015094
Looks like the "minorities" (well, except Asians) do well at something the "majority" of the time. It happens that thing is murder.
