This afternoon, demonstrators and interfaith leaders are planning to gather in Times Square as part of "Today, I Am A Muslim Too." The rally is taking place to protest an upcoming congressional hearing on Muslims and homegrown terrorism led by LI Representative Peter King. The rally is set to begin at 2 p.m., and you can check for updates on the event at the groups twitter.
"The deep irony is that Rep. King has begun polluting our national conversation with his hypocritical hate mongering at just the moment that the Arab world's secular revolution has created a unique opportunity for strengthened cultural ties," wrote jack-of-all-trades Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam, Chairman of RUSH Communications, and one of the organizers of the rally. The rally was organized by a coalition of over 75 interfaith, nonprofit, governmental, and civil liberties groups. Among those expected to be there are Reverend Al Sharpton, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf (who was the face of the Park51 project up until recently), and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.
