Angelo Monderoy—who was 18 when he was arrested and charged for breaking into a Crown Heights apartment and fatally setting a cat on fire—faced court yesterday. Investigators allegedly found a half-filled container of lighter fluid in his backpack, and Brooklyn ADA Joshua Charlton say Monderoy and an accomplice brought the cat into the apartment where they "stepped on it, put lighter fluid on it and lit it," reports the Post. The injuries from the fire led to the death of the cat, named Tommy Two Times.
Tommy was a member of a group of cats that the building's super, Charles Evans, would often feed. "He was taking the place of Tommy the First, who is no longer with us,” Charlton said. “He was warm and friendly; Tommy Two Times was Charles’ buddy." Even though Monderoy told Charlton that their intention when they picked up the cat was to "light it up," and a backpack containing books with Monderoy's name on them and the lighter fluid was found at the scene, Monderoy's lawyer said, "There is no forensic evidence linking my client to this case." At least we can agree, regardless of race, politics or gender, that if Monderoy is guilty he is most definitely the worst person in the world.
