Family's Cat Found Days After Fatal Brooklyn Fire

2011_02_fattygirl.jpg Five days after a five-alarm fire ravaged a Flatbush apartment building, killing one and injuring dozens, firefighters found a family's three-year-old cat. Fatty Girl was coaxed out of the charred apartment by firefighters, who followed her from the dining room, to a closet and finally a bedroom. Lt. Steve Molino said, "This thing was really trying not to be found. [She] was quick for a heavy cat."

Fatty Girl's human, Wright Gillette, said that he wasn't home during the fire, "My sister and wife were here. And they grabbed what they could just like everyone else and just ran out. And they couldn't grab all the cats and animals. So when I came on the block and all the smoke and everything coming out of the apartment, we were told not to have our hopes up." Gillette's wife and sister were able to take their Husky and three of their five cats (they found the fourth later on).

Gillette was thrilled at his reunion with Fatty Girl, "She came right to me and won’t let me put her down. I’ve had her three years - from birth. She’s like a family member, and am so happy she’s okay after she was in those conditions for a few days like that." The Post has cute video of firefighters, Gillette and Fatty Girl herself:
