Free Brooklyn Craigslist Digs Turn Into Sex Slavery Nightmare

2011_02_craigslist.jpg A too-good-to-be-true offer of a free room in a Brooklyn apartment turned out to be how a man allegedly lured a Wisconsin woman to his East Williamsburg home, where he is accused of beating, chaining her to a radiator and raping her. John Hopkins, 45, was charged with rape, assault and unlawful imprisonment.

According to the Post, "The victim, 27, e-mailed [Hopkins] about his Web ad, which said he had a room in his East Williamsburg apartment, police sources said. After telling her she could stay for free if she cooked and cleaned, Hopkins paid for her plane ticket and picked her up at Kennedy Airport on Feb. 4... As soon as they arrived at his place on Humboldt Street, Hopkins allegedly told the woman that she was to be his slave. He then allegedly blindfolded and gagged her, handcuffed her to a radiator, and began beating and raping her."

The victim was held for eight days, until Hopkins allegedly allowed her to leave for her job at a restaurant. She did not call police, but did call her mother, who contacted authorities. The police found the victim at the apartment, reportedly "trembling" on Hopkins' bed.

  • As much as I feel bad for the lady involved, you'd have to be pretty stupid to move to a strange city as a single young woman and move in with a totally unknown male in the crazy person capitol of the world (NYC).

This definitely validates my major rule of life; Don't do stupid stuff that could get you killed.

  • dollarmenu

This does not bode well for his university's application rate.

  • random transplant

"wisconsin this, that, and the other thing"

You people disgust me. Blame the victim isn't enough for you?

NYC is a veritable hotbed of craigslist-style sex slavery. Those immigrants dont go to the cops either.

The problem is NYC, frankly, and craigslist. not an emotional-support phone call BETWEEN A SEXUAL SLAVERY VICTIM AND HER MOTHER.

  • Rod

we only know HER side of the story, making this 100% meaningless.

calling her the "victim" at this stage is premature.

if not for the millions of cases where women LIED TO POLICE, I might jump the gun and blindly believe the girl and the govt here.

    but I don't.

  • robingee

    Millions of cases?

  • S.D.

Yep, I'm thinking she was (to put it mildly) in one hell of a bad state of mind. She desperately called her Mom for help and her Mom got it for her.

For the victim, I really hope she gets all the help she needs to deal with this horrific crime.

For that "man", put him in general population.

  • Rod

general population isn't a big deal.

you watch too much hollywood crap.

  • I agree with you, for all we know he lied to her and said he was a cop or something that made her fear going to the cops.

  • Stevennnn

How did she get a job at a restaurant?

  • dollarmenu

    Craigslist, naturally.

  • just saying

I was wondering the same thing. Hopkins supposedly held the victim captive for eight days before allowing her to leave for her job at a Manhattan restaurant. It looks like she wasn't allowed out of the apartment before then. Assuming the victim also found her job through craigslist, she still would have needed a personal interview. This account is obviously not the the whole story.

  • jennesy

Agree - and how did she get the guy to believe her enough so that she was able to leave? And did it sounds like she went BACK to the place after "work."

  • phishyeel

NOTHING makes it OK to violate a human being like this man did and he deserves what's coming to him.

That being said, I find it pretty mind-blowing that this grown woman was so unbelievably naive. Really, a free room? Really, a free flight? Really, a middle-aged man was going to give you "free" room and board for cooking and cleaning? Nothing is free in this city, Doll - and certainly not real estate.

And something tells me she knew just how foolish she was since she called her mother rather than the police.

  • CuriousLadee

Everyone keeps saying that nothing is free, and this doesn't make sense to me. Some people "pay" a house keeper, a cook, a butler, or a nanny, and give them a room to stay in. It is not so unusual. People have been live in domestic workers for centuries, without it having to entail sex and beatings. There is nothing "free" about doing someone's house work or cooking. It's called domestic work. For centuries, women have traveled from their homes to be house keepers or nannies for people they never met, including single men who do not want to do their own house work and cooking, or do not have time to take care of their own kids. Some women ( or men, ie butlers) travel internationally for work. How many teen age girls do you know, who have gone over sees to nanny for people they never met. There's nothing so unusual or naive about it at all.
In this day, I would not advise doing it through craigs list. People should go through companies that are known for arranging real work for people. Hopefully these companies do some kind of back ground check, or gather some information about people. Who knows. There's got to be a safe way to find work or rooms to rent, where people aren't at such risk for being taken advantage of.

  • l3iodeez

Actually, coerced sex and beatings were par for the course for domestic help up until relatively recently, like the last hundred years.

  • robingee

    >> Nothing is free in this city, Doll >>

    You tell 'em Mickey Spillane.

  • Bernie_Geotz_Squirrel_Luv

Aren't there always a couple of these ads floating around in CL? I keep on thinking I'm seeing these Free Room available but you must clean and cook and must be female. People respond to them? really?

  • FU Boy

Not to detract from the obvious crime that was committed here, but some people enjoy being tied down, blindfolded, gagged, beaten and used sexually.

Some people pay damn good money to have it done to them (Yes, there is a 'Dungeon District' in this city). And yes, some people do agree to complete servitude to another (locked in a cage for sleep / never leave the house / clean my floor with your tongue).

The trick is, when it's just 'kinky', there's consent from and an easy way out for the submissive.

  • robingee

What? You mean there's such a thing as bondage and submission?! In THIS CITY!? Amazing!

  • splicernyc

Disgusting pig. Put him in with the general population and tell them his a kid raper.
