Guess the Year: High Rise Edition

gty020911.jpg

[UPDATE BELOW] What year did this new high rise pop up next to some older brownstones? Take your best guess and we'll update later with the answer, as well as location.

UPDATE: This photo was taken in 1959, and is captioned, "New high rise residence next to old brownstone apartment buildings on 3rd Ave—ongoing construction throughout the city." You can check out a closer view here. This is the same year this photo of the last brownstone standing was taken on East 69th Street.

!954-55 judging by the autos in front of the trolley and parked on the street.

Damn! Read this too late; woulda' guessed UES, 1963.

3rd Avenue and 9th Avenue had those lampposts, likely one of those 2. They got cobra necks in the late 60s or early 70s. My guess is between 1960 and 1964

Before you all make fools of yourself, use google street view and bing birds eye before you spout shit.About building age, use this http://gis.nyc.gov/doitt/nycit...

Sorry did my shit spouting get in your mouth? Oh my bad...

  • GentleGiant

You realize this is all in fun, right?

  • xgeyiph772

Obviously not. All the guesses above are within a few years of one another, and everybody agrees it's the East Side of Manhattan, so I'm not sure what silver is getting all apoplectic about.

Just judging by the blurry cars on the street (and I'm not wearing my glasses), I'm gonna say 1955.

  • xgeyiph772

Second Ave at 65th St, around 1955-56.

    1964. Upper East Side.

  • FU Boy

    Wild guess: 1973.

  • xgeyiph772

Cars/buses are way too old for '73.

  • FU Boy

My family's been known to hold onto cars for way too long. In 2001, my '83 VW Rabbit was finally retired with 230,000 miles on it. So yeah, 'too old' isn't something that enters to my mind with cars.

    Either way, wild guess fail.

  • xgeyiph772

I drove a '67 Chrysler Newport as recently as 1992, so I hear ya! In old pics, I usually try to find the newest car or bus and then take educated guess from there. Newest cars in the above pic are all mid-1950s.
