Old Navy Very Selective About Offensive T-Shirts

020811oldnavy.jpg
Guess which one of these shirts was pulled for being too offensive?
St. Patrick's Day is still a month away, but Old Navy decided it's never too early for a witty "Irish" pun on a green t-shirt. Their website already has numerous shamrocked options for Patty's Day wear, but they're reportedly pulling two from stores after customers complained they were offensive toward the Irish. Old Navy customer Keith Wilson complained, “Can’t you find another way to sell t-shirts than intimating they’re all drunks?”

The shirts in question featured the slogans "Irish I Was Drunk" and "Party Like You're Irish." The latter features Snoopy holding a mug of "root beer." A spokeswoman at Old Navy told us, "We certainly take pride in giving our customers fashionable, fun products, but we do recognize that they went a little too far. We apologize to the Irish community and are ommitting them from the stores and online as soon as possible." The Snoopy shirt is still on the website, but clicking on it brings you to this tasteful selection reading "I [shamrock] Budweiser." There's also "Dublin Up" featuring two pints of beer. Well, you gotta wear something to the Reinforcin' O' The Stereotypes.

  • I know this is totally irrelevant, but they can't even get their t-shirt slogans correct.
    A shamrock has 3 leafs, not 4.
  • Not bad, This is simply a wearable shirt design. In my opinion there is no need to create an issue.

if Old Navy sold t shirts making fun of dipshit bicycle riders then it would be offensive.
  • I don't believe I know any Irish people who drink Budweiser.

I'm Irish and I do, I drink many types/brands of beer, I love it in all it's flavors!

Can't we just say they like to fight instead?

Next time you need a cop, or a fireman, or a paramedic, tell him you think he's a drunk.

And here's another factoid my ex- told me, when you're tempted to stereotype Irish guys as drunks: The single ethnic group with the most graves in America's national cemeteriies are the Irish. They also are also the single ethnic group that have been awarded the most Medals of Honor.

Are all public workers Irish? Or is that just a figment of your conservative fantasy?
  • ktinnyc
So the cop I saw in full dress blues taking a piss on the side of a building on 53rd street during the St. Patrick's day parade wasn't drunk?
  • PaulaNYC
And you knew he was Irish because....????
  • ktinnyc
I have no idea what his ancestry is but I know from the uniform he was a cop.

I know it was 3 hours ago but I was referring to your comment, "Next time you need a cop, or a fireman, or a paramedic, tell him you think he's a drunk."

I dated an Irish guy whose parents came from "The Old Sod". He was an absolute gentleman at all times and I always felt safe with him. He was a Navy officer, but all his high school friends were fireman, police officers, teachers, or some other service-related position. Every time we went to a party, people would insinuate he was a drinker because of his nationality. (His last name started with an "O' ")

Funny thing is, he was ALWAYS the one to make sure that the people who DID get too drunk or too high had a way home, even if it meant driving them there himself if he was driving. (He never, ever, drank anything more than a Coke if he was behind the wheel.) If the party was here in the City, he drank, but I never once saw him drunk, but he was ALWAYS the one who made sure that the guys who couldn't handle their liquor found their way to the bathroom or home in a taxicab.

It amazes me that in 2011, we cling to this stereotype. I know some Blacks who don't like watermellon or fried chicken. And I know some Italians who aren't in the mob. And I know some Jews who aren't cheap. But if you dared implied those stereotypes -- especially in a commercial venue -- you would be crucified.

For the Irish, its routine. People should be ashamed of themselves.
  • RevWaldo
The stereotype isn't that we Irish are drunks. The stereotype is that we can hold our liquor. Which is true of course. Sláinte!
  • unretrofiedforu
Same thing happens to black people. And Asian people. Sad I know - but a lot of this has to do with a lot of the things your side says - so STFU.
  • HughGass
    your story is no fun
  • sparecake
Why is Old Navy selling Urban Outfitters shirts?
  • wow mom cool
Gimme a black guy drinking cough syrup.

Old Navy customer Keith Wilson complained, “Can’t you find another way to sell t-shirts than intimating they’re all drunks?”

    Have it your way, Enya.
  • The Irish Black Rose
If people spent as much time bettering themselves as they do being "offended" we would have a population of people who have their shit together.
  • HughGass
Complainers should spend time on the 3:34pm LIRR back to Ronkonkoma after the St. Patty's day parade ... then see if the shirts are untruthful.
  • PaulaNYC
And how many of those kids are Irish???

They're Jersey Shore wannabes (a/k/a guidos and guidettes)
  • unretrofiedforu
So are you saying 'jersey shore' people are all Italian?

  • yeah how the fuck is that offensive?
  • Subduction
Snoopy drinking a beer? Forget the Irish part -- is that even officially licensed? The Charles Schultz estate approved a t-shirt in which one of their children's characters is getting loaded, or is Old Navy pulling a fast there too?
  • justme1977
He's drinking a ROOT BEER, not a beer, get your facts straight. I'm full Irish, and a HUGE Snoopy lover and I think people take way too much offense to things, if you don't like it then don't buy it, but don't ruin it for others. Irish do have a bad rap at times, but so do a lot of other ethnicities, everyone just needs to find a way to let it go and have fun!
  • justme1977
He was drinking ROOT BEER not beer, make sure you have your facts straight. I loved the shirt and was highly upset when I went back to get one and they were all gone, and I am a HUGE Snoopy lover and 100% Irish.
  • RevWaldo
Snoopy was always quaffing root beer in the comics, particularly at Bill Mauldin's house on Veteran's Day.

I'm guessing this is a vintage design - Snoopy T-shirts were very big in the 70s - with Old Navy going for that retro-hipster look.
  • vertigone
Yeah, I'm not offended by the sentiment (I'm also not Irish), but I don't like my man Snoopy getting roped into this nonsense. Also, St Patrick's Day is a bore.
  • dollarmenu
That was my first thought. How does a company the size and visibility of Old Navy get away with that?
  • Stevennnn
I don't see anything wrong with this. Why do people get so offended so easily?
  • your comment offends me.
  • Peanut_Butter
Your lack of capitalization offends me.
