No Smokers On City Council?

020611homer.jpg It's a total shocker that the group that voted to ban smoking in city parks, beaches and public plazas is showing little empathy for smokers who will now have nowhere to enjoy a cigarette but their own homes (unless the neighbors complain). The Daily News reports that the City Council can't think of a single member who currently smokes. "It wouldn't have gotten passed if there were smokers there," said smoker Josie Byrne. "I think it's a little ridiculous. They're trying to control people." Members of the Bloomberg administration trying to control people? Naaaaaah.

As a lifelong non-smoker, I'm pretty tolerant. Its the ex-smokers who are the worst.
However, smokers are usually inconsiderate slobs who don't care about the mess they make. So, for using every public place as an ashtray, you smokers earned the parks ban. Congrats.

  • boogpowell

agreed it is disgusting the mess that is made. but maybe banning isnt the solution. How about $500 tickets for littering in the park. The city will lose more and more money on cigarette taxes as it bans it in more places. Keeping it legal and ticketing it is a far better economic option for the city. Litter is the biggest part i hate as a nonsmoker. but i dont want to live in a police state and i cant help but think whats next?

  • ANGRYGOD11

Very valid objections. But, with looming budget cuts in park maintenance, now would be a good time to stop smoking in city parks. I really don't want NYPD concentrating on ticketing smokers, until just about all violent crime is solved.

When are we gonna repeal the Clean Air Act already? Someone tell the nanny state it's my right to be forced to consume carcinogens as a necessary part of visiting any public park.

  • ANGRYGOD11

When? How about the day after we all stop breathing oxygen?

  • virgilstarkwell

hey smokers, i'll make you a deal: i won't bother you in public with my perfectly legal addiction to online porn, you don't bother me with your addiction to cigarettes.

  • edgie168

    cool story bro

  • VelvetTiff

Oh, my God! Cigarette smoke! RUN, RUN! I'm so glad I'm moving to Brazil.

  • ANGRYGOD11

I'm very glad you're leaving, too.
    Goodbye!

  • spiv

what a bunch of whiny little pussies you all sound like, cough cough, boo hoo.

    great point

Cigarettes are nothing more than an addiction. No one should have to encounter the noxious odors of cigarettes if they chose not to. One whiff of cigarette smoke and you have that nasty taste in your mouth for an hour. Don't poison me with your addiction.

  • VelvetTiff

Does anyone really care what the fuck you think about anything? I sure don't.

  • Guest

Wow Velvet, That was very well put. Are you craving your nicotine at this moment? Face it, nicotine is an addiction. Get your drug fix through an e-cigarette or patch so that you don't poison me. What if I carried a can of road tar around with me and lit it on fire wherever I went because I was addicted to the fumes? I'm sure you would not stand for that. Take a few minutes, think about it and see if you can respond without expletives or nastiness. I bet that you can't. Surprise me.

  • boogpowell

If you drive, you basically carry around a can of road tar thats on fire all the time. Car pollution is far more of a problem than cigarette pollution. I can understand not smoking in a closed facility. But to ban outdoor smoking is a clear violation of our freedoms. The question is whats next. It could be something you enjoy. Im not a smoker. Have one once in a while but thats about it. But if the govt keeps taking away our freedoms we will have none left. Its very selfish to support govt banning of something just bc you dont like it. Think of your favorite thing and imagine it being banned.

  • Sorry but, being someone with weak lungs thanks to pneumonia, I'm glad for this. It means I can actually GO to these parks, beaches and public plazas without needing steroids.

Sorry smokers, but I'm not risking choking, gasping and a trip to the ER just so you can sate your addiction. Try those e-cigs and stuff, I hear they work wonders!

  • Scout14

And it certainly makes sense that parks that are enjoyed by tens of thousands of people each day should have rules to make sure you don't cough. Sounds like if you just took your steroids, you'd be just fine. but don't worry, I'm fine with it too, because I'm going to have a bill passed that no one can sell roasted nuts anywhere because the smell makes me want to vomit.

  • silver

The delivery truck delivering your food smokes is smoking a couple hundred cigarettes at the same time. We have to ban all stores in NYC.

  • Sorry, but no, it's compeltely different. Different chemicals and particulate sizes affect in different ways. I can be around an exhaust fine, but being near a smoker causes me to start coughing.
