Why Should Kenneth Cole Limit His Crass Tweets to Egypt?

020311cole.jpg Thugs on the payroll of Egyptian tyrant (and American pal) Hosni Mubarak have been hunting down journalists and human rights workers and taking them into "protective custody," nudge nudge, wink wink. On a related note, Kenneth Cole's Washed Leather Bomber Jacket is on sale for just $398.00. We know that because a few hours ago Kenneth Cole tweeted, "Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo." Cute! But why stop there? As long as Cole is marketing products on the backs of slain political dissidents, he might as well connect the dots between his clothes and other big news stories. Some suggestions:

  • 9/11: Never Forget. And never forget about our Scotland Bard boots!
  • Julian Assange can protect himself with Kenneth Cole's Belted Trench
  • After record-breaking flooding, Australia's hit with the worst cyclone ever. But they'll really get blown away by our Out N About heels!
  • Two out of five pregnancies end in abortion in NYC, which means two out of five moms can fit back into our Leather Dress while it's still on sale.
  • Oysters are functionally extinct, but our new spring collection will make you go aw shucks.

Kenneth Cole's fake PR twitter has more, including such great promotional tie-ins as: "People of Haiti, fall into our store for earth-shattering savings!" and "Wardrobe got you water-BORED? GITMO of our new spring collection." As for the real KC, whoever manages his Twitter account sort of apologized, tweeting, "We weren't intending to make light of a serious situation. We understand the sensitivity of this historic moment." Oh, well as long as it wasn't their intention to sound like self-absorbed d-bags, it's all good. And besides, look at the bottom line! Business Insider reports: On a day when the market is flat, Kenneth Cole shares are up over 2.4%.

Kenneth Cole is Jewish. Jews can make fun of anyone and anything and it will be a-ok.

I think @KennethColePR has already covered this territory.

I like KC fashions, but that tweet is inappropriate. The fake ones are LOL.

  • SFNY

Yeah. Totally funny fake ones, and so unfortunate about the real KC's "joke."

He realized that too and has issued an apology on his Facebook page:

    Kenneth Cole
I apologize to everyone who was offended by my insensitive tweet about the situation in Egypt. I’ve dedicated my life to raising awareness about serious social issues, and in hindsight my attempt at humor regarding a nation liberating themselves against oppression was poorly timed and absolutely inappropriate.

Kenneth Cole, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer

PS I don't work for them or even buy any of their products, I just think it's good when people take responsibility and apologize for their actions.

    It's the new Pete Hoekstra!

Middle East can riot, fight and call for death to Americans; one guy makes a silly joke and everyone has a cow. Lighten up folks.

  • OMG THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING ALIVE!

I don't have a problem with that KC line. I think it's cute and funny.
