Park Slope Lady Very Angry At Vegan Ballet Slippers!

blackswanface0211.jpg A writer going by "Bitchy Mom" at FIPS is ALL CAPS freaking out upon discovering (via the NY Times) that a local dance studio wants its students to wear vegan ballet slippers. Is that really such a bad thing? Is being not cruel to animals so horrific that one's gut reaction is: "BARF"? And when did Park Slope moms become so animal-blood-thirsty? Anyway, the Cynthia King Dance Studio on Prospect Avenue is one of many studios who want their students to go cruelty-free with their footwear, or as "Bitchy Mom" puts it, they're "turning your kids into douche bags." Which is probably preferable to turning them in to bitter mommy bloggers.

Cynthia King is a wonderful person and dance teacher who has created and sustained a nurturing, beautiful dance space for kids and adults, and has contributed to the community around her. I have seen the happy faces of the kids after a ballet class there. They're having a great time. By contrast, the author of the blog entry being referenced here has done...what, exactly, for the community? For kids? For Brooklyn? For dance?

I read an excellent phrase in a biography of the Buddha: "The jungle of opinion". The internet is that, exactly. And sometimes one encounters a feces-flinging ape in that jungle. Don't believe a word of it.

Cynthia's the very best! And that's all there is to it.

  • Oh my god, I think they use recycled paper for their flyers as well! SUCH DOUCHE-BAGS! Compassion is so annoying! I prefer total apathy and nihilism, it requires much less thinking or caring.

If this were 1950, BITCHY MOM might be complaining that there are black children dancing beside white children, too.

If we care about cows, what's next? People marrying garbage cans? Homosexuality?

Cynthia King is an incredible woman who runs an amazing school that actually gives a crap about something beyond "self". Is that so unnerving? She'll be thanked in hindsight ...and how is giving little girls, who often adore animals, dead cow parts to wear on their little pink feet not turning them into animal-hating douche-bags who couldn't be bothered by anything other than vanity and selfish convenience while conforming to (cruel and unnecessary) social norms?

And lastly, anyone who self-identifies as "Bitchy Mom".... well, you get it.

turning your kids into douche bags

Awesome line. I support BITCHY MOM

  • Dogan_Kalendar

    I blame Natalie Portman.

It's certainly nothing to flip out over.

  • solidunit

Seems like the mom is overreacting a bit, but it is kind of shitty that the ballet studio wants to push their values on the students and in turn, their parents. Are they really gonna turn away a student that brings leather flats to class? Really? How about a polite recommendation instead?

The owners of the ballet school can make whatever rules they want. It's a private business, if that dumb mom doesn't like it she can send her kid to a different school.

Wow, i think you need to relax. If you've ever read that blog before you'd have some context. But no, you are trying to make a name for yourself on gothamist by attacking someone else.

  • xgeyiph772

That's right, because nothing makes one famous like posting an anonymous comment on Gothamist, which is read all over Wmsbrg, Park Slope and...well, Wmsbrg and Park Slope are enough, no?

  • Ballet IS torture... forcing little girls to conform to a narrow standard of expression (and chronic foot injury) until that magical moment when they discover Modern Dance or stripping, then proceed to free their bottled up souls.

God bless modern dance and brass poles.

what point was i trying to make?

  • healthstudent

I love the phrase "ALL CAPS freaking out." That's excellent.

  • xgeyiph772

Generally, when I freak out I like to do so in lower case. Not so dramatic.

  • Just Me

When is an annoying mother in Park Slope not angry about something?
