Prospect Park's unofficial wildlife rehabilitator, and friend of waterfowl, Anne-Katrin Titze has sent over this photo. She tells us this new Canada goose arrived at the southern end Prospect Park Lake last Friday morning (joining 161 other Canada geese currently in the park, by her count). Good luck, H9Z4—you're going to need it (just like that girl next to you needs pants).

Actually those neck collars are put on geese by government researchers to study goose populations and/or to track migrating Canada geese (yes, there are a few that still migrate).

I believe that orange and blue collars like that one are widely used for Canada geese living in the Mississippi Flyway, with blue collars being used for the U.S. section and orange collars for the Canadian portion of the Flyway. So this particular goose was probably originally collared somewhere in or near Manitoba province in Canada.

Somewhere there's a government website where you can report this goose's number.

no pants subway ride meets tagged goose, up next at gothamist!

  • Yeah, my first thought upon seeing that picture wasn't "tagged goose." It was "why in the name of god is that chick not wearing pants?" A secondary question was "why are those people so close to that goose? Are they stupid?" And then I realized my second question also applied to the first one.

They need to exterminate all these birds before they bring down another airplane.
