Photos: Icicle Audi Forever

We know that in this weather there's not much else you can do but wait eagerly at your laptops for the latest news of the icicle Audi's fate, a story of national importance. Thankfully the Post tracked down owner Pete Helfer to figure out just how he managed to free his car of over six inches of ice.

Helfer said he broke his back window and scratched the paint in the process, but after a day of work he freed the car with a hammer, a chisel and a blowtorch. He said of the initial icing, "It was really adding insult to injury because I found it after the Jets game." But it's free! Everyone is fine! EV Grieve even got their hands on some of the ice so you can see just how thick it is. And with that, the media can move on to the next imperiled automobile to save gawk at while others do the heavy lifting.

Makes no sense to chip away around the back window. Do like some people suggested. Use hot water to free one door. Once inside, start the engine and let engine heat melt the rest, as long as there's enough gas in the tank.

his exhaust and grill are smothered with ice so no go there.

Grills are for cooling the radiator. The engine can get plenty of air since the bottom of the engine compartment isn't sealed. That model Audi has dual exhausts. I doubt both were completely plugged.

  • So chip away enough for the car to breathe (without hitting paint or glass) and turn it on. The rear defroster would have taken care of that back window in 20 minutes.

To his defense, I would probably have gotten so frustrated I would have busted out the blowtorch and chisel as well.

  • Newhce

He totally should have sold it to the city as a temporary public art exhibit.

  • Woodendesigner

It amazes me how little common sense there is out in the world. I'm actually surprised that he did not mess up the car even more.

  • Where do you need to go so badly that justifies applying a chisel, hammer, and fire to your car? This isn't some beater either.

  • GentleGiant

A few buckets of hot water would have saved the back window.

  • Newhce

He probably lives in a 5 story walk up. Remember, things that seem so simple can be a pain in nyc.

Sounds like someone needs a long hose they can attach to the kitchen sink!

He freed the car with a hammer, a chisel and a blowtorch. O_O
