Wonder Bread Factory Closes Today

201101_wonderyears.jpg Where were you the day the bread stopped? The Jamaica, Queens, Wonder Bread factory bakes its last loaves this afternoon, after 130 years of bringing bread to the masses. Hostess, which owns Wonder Bread, blames the closing on the excessive costs required to modernize the factory. It's trying to sell the building and a neighboring garage. Meanwhile the adjacent factory outlet will stay open for the foreseeable future, moving elsewhere in Queens once the building is sold. Oh, and 175 workers are out of a job.

Wonder bread is not leaving us forever, they are just closing a factory in queens, not that weird considering the economy and cost of rent in nyc.

I know the article is really hard to understand, chill out.

    oh, my bad.

Wow, sorry those people lost their jobs, but the substance known as "Wonder Bread" was inedible. It should have been phased out long ago and brought back in a healthier form, might have been a different ending to this story. I grew up eating that garbage, and not sad to see it gone. Can't believe it took this long.

Seriously, there's so little manufacturing left in the city - shouldn't these places get all sort of tax breaks and abatements rather than the umpteenth condo developers?

i would smell the breads baking whenever i took the LIRR home.

Wonder white had changed since I was a kid, and not for the better.

Oh, man. That sucks. And it helps kids grow 12 ways.

  • The factory was really gross.

I see the loading dock looks gross, but that's not exactly where the bread gets made. Have you seen the inside?

Personally I haven't had Wonder Bread in years.

... and the Economic Development Corporation is working on...?? Keeping this plant open and handing out some of the $$ to assist with the rehab of the plant should have been on the top ten.

I thought keeping manufacturing jobs in this city was a priority. Guess the real #1 is making sure there are enough people to keep salaries at minimum wage.

    Holy crap.
