Bicyclist Killed ON the BQE

The BQE near Atlantic Avenue
We received reports this morning that a cyclist was fatally hit by a car in a hit and run around 4:30 a.m. near the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp to the BQE, and now WABC is reporting that the cyclist was actually riding ON the BQE. The NYPD could not confirm any details to us at this time, but WABC says the unidentified male victim was hit in the westbound lanes of the BQE by a vehicle that drove away. The cyclist was then hit by a second vehicle and pinned underneath until first responders could get him out. That second driver stayed at the scene, and EMTs rushed the victim to Long Island College Hospital.

Westbound lanes of the BQE were closed because of the accident, and the on-ramp from Atlantic Avenue was also shut down. We'll update when we have more information, but if it's true the cyclist was in fact biking on the BQE, we're not surprised the ride ended this way. [WABC report via Brooklyn Heights Blog]

This dude was burning off some serious karma. He chose to go out this way for some cosmic reason.

    It's the Circle of LIfe!
    And it moves us all.

  • WHY would anyone ride a bike on the BQE??????? There is still snow everywhere, it's dark and it's a highway for christsake

  • Silly, Silly hipster. The BQE is no place for you! Hope he did not damage the vehicle whilst he was breaking the law. Oh, I forgot, cyclist never break the law. Fat lot of good that does him now

BTW, Brooklyn Paper is reporting that both drivers remained at the scene of the accident.

There is no way the driver didn't know what he hit, you do not hit a bike and think it was muffler, or random piece of garbage. Obviously, the driver left for other reasons. Why would the driver stop when they know that police NEVER catch hit-run drivers unless there are witnesses that are willing to risk their own lives to put the driver behind bars?

Be extra careful if you are driving on BQE late night, I once saw a homeless guy with a shopping cart walking on BQE in the trench between Hamilton and Atlantic Avenues.

Two days ago I saw a latino deliveryman riding up that same on-ramp with bags of food dangling off the handlebars. If the victim in this case was recent immigrant delivery guy, it points to an issue that doesn't often come up in the overplayed whining wars on cycling: when bike delivery jobs are staffed by people who don't speak English and aren't familiar at all with urban/American traffic conventions, bad things are going to happen if there isn't some sort of education -- whether it be better signage, better regulation of employers, etc.
To the average American/New Yorker, it's a basic understanding that you don't ride bikes or walk on limited access highways -- if you've never really been around limited access highways in your life, that assumption isn't going to be automatic.

Yes. I think this points to a problem with this report. Not to split hairs, but I'd think it would be worthwhile for gauging issues associated with bicycles in an urban environment to differentiate between a tradesman or delivery person riding a bike and a recreational cyclist, professional cyclist or bicycle commuter. I think also that it is important to know whether this person was impaired by alcohol.

Either way, someone died and that's unfortunate. And I'd hate to be the person who hit the person on the bike. I can't imagine having to live with that memory. I don't think, contrary to some of the high emotion remarks above, that anyone is arguing for a bike path on the BQE or anything else. I've ridden on the BQE on a bike during the 5 Borough Bike Ride, and I don't think the BQE is any place for cars, let alone bicycles. Potholes with potholes in them.

But why bother making that distinction when it's clearly so much fun to shit on imaginary hipsters, especially when they've been maimed or killed?

  • ganghiscon

Ding ding ding. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was an immigrant riding home or to work or working.

this was entirely the cyclist's fault in the first place. and leaving the scene is absolutely criminal, not to mention utterly inhumane.

If cyclists needed to display a visible license like hunters and fishermen need to; we could penalize this dumb ass cyclist for breaking the law, by revoking his riding privilege for a period of time.

  • right, uh, you know, if he wasn't already dead.

  • random transplant

Remember the other day, when I walked you through the difference between a 'pay for the fish you take' license & a license to use an already public road?

    No?

The car who drove off probably had a license plate. Even if they can use it to bring justice after the fact, it didn't save any lives.

  • xXxMExXx

    1. The vast majority of people who fish “catch and release.”
    2. What type, size, quantity, etc. fish you choose to keep has nothing to do with the license. The license lets you participate.

  • random transplant

    1. depends on where you are. I'm under the impression you don't need a license to catch and release.

    2. the license comes with stipulations - don't overfish, don't fish off season, don't fish for endangered species, ect.

I haven't fished in half my life and I can tell your reaching. I just can't figure out why. He's dead, and the drive-off accident (rationale for bike registration) was committed by a vehicle which already had a license.

  • jibbly

    Licenses...for when DEATH isn't enough!

  • jibbly

This death was purely the stupidity of the cyclist. There's no wandering onto the BQE by accident. It was a deliberate and stupid act that, surprise surprise, got the person killed.

I will assume it's either a) a crackhead who had no reason to care or b) a fixie dumbass recording a "stunt" for youtube.
