Is Eating 538 Pounds Of Tuna In 33 Months Abnormal?

201101_tunacan.jpg We like the Bumble Bee Tuna song as much as the next guy, just not this next guy. Because Lee Porrazzo of White Plains? He really loves his tuna. Thinking it was the "cleanest source of protein" around he ate it nearly every day, reportedly consuming 538 pounds of the stuff in 33 months. Naturally, having never heard of Jeremey Piven, he proceeded to get mercury poisoning and is suing the canning company. But the Bee is stinging back, arguing it isn't their fault when their product is "abnormally overconsumed."

Almost everyone knows there is an inherent risk in eating too much fish and shellfish. EPA recommends eating 12 ounces or less of tuna a week.

Half a pound of tuna a day equals about 2.5 cans a day. Doesn't seem like a lot, and many bodybuilding types probably consume equivalent quantities. Probably none of them did it for almost 3 years though, because most humans would get sick of it. Or they realized that tuna contains mercury. Either this guy's really dedicated or a complete dolt, or both.

If hes eating that much tuna, he should be buying the commercial restaurant sized cans.

That only comes out to an average of half a pound per day. If that's his favorite choice of protein, then there's nothing abnormal or unreasonable in that rate of consumption.

  • ANGRYGOD11

If hes eating tuna 3 times a day for 33 months (average month is 30 days), the 538 pounds equals less than 4 ounces of tuna per meal.
That is not excessive, however there is a good reason why everyone should vary their diet: Poisoning, if that single source goes wrong.
