If Bloomberg has his way you could soon legally hail a livery cab—technically livery cab can only pick up fares by pre-arrangement. The Post reports that in tomorrow's State of the State speech Hizzoner will argue that "whether you’re standing on 42nd Street in Manhattan, or 452nd Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, or 42nd Street in Sunnyside, Queens, you ought to be able to hail a cab." Frankly? We completely agree. The TLC reports that 97.5% of fares start in Manhattan or an airport, so we've got room for some legal livery pickups in the outer boroughs.

  • Finding cabs at odd hours can be quite a task. I was in Boston the other night and could not find a cab back home. So I call my roomie and tell him I will be late. He suggests I call Justdial at 1800-500-0000 for a cab. I didn't quiet understand him, but I didn't have much of a choice. So I call these guys and within 30 mins, I am on my way home. These guys were not only prompt in their response, but they actually connected me with a Boston Cab Service. The cab came looking for me, instead of other way round.

Livery cabs have always turned out to be a better deal for me. I wish he'd make it illegal for them to honk at you, though. The constant toot-tooting of them on Church and Flatbush Aves is supremely annoying.

    wow.

the 3 -time -Republican candidate bloomtard speaks out in favor of competition.

in his 10th year in office when he thought he had 8 years max.

  • Bloomberg was actually only a two time republican candidate. He ran as an independent last time, even though the Republicn party endorsed him.

Livery cabs should be legal - they are trying to make a living too!!! I want a picture of the guy driving and a meter on each one.

These cabs charge an arm and a leg but when you're above 125th or in the Bronx, you have no real choice.

  • zincink

    That is true..

  • m015094

    "you have no real choice"

except to take the bus or subway....or walk or bike.

I'm all for more competition, just as long as those livery guys get to the 21st century and start accepting credit cards. Next time the subway farts out, I won't be at the mercy of the handful of yellow cabs that don't want to leave Manhattan.

  • whitecastlerock

how about a rate card for the passengers? these livery cabs charge you whatever the fuck they want to

  • HypocraticOath

But they also negotiate fares...cmon, this is NYC, bargain it down!

  • So it's bad enough I have actual taxis cutting me off for fares, now I need to dodge livery cars too. C'mon Bloomy...this is going to cause so many more accidents. Now livery cabs and taxis are going to fight for fares? It's going to be the f*ckin' wild west out there.

typo: 452nd Street in Sunset Park

  • jibbly

Dude that's just the hidden street that hipsters haven't discovered yet with the awesome taco, banh mi, and hand pulled noodle shops.

  • It's not legal?? I thought it was just a massive ripoff.

Seriously, last time the dude wanted to charge me $30 for a 5-minute trip. I mean I know it was raining and I had luggage, but jesus. I'd walk before I paid $30.

  • oanda

livery cabs stop for people all the time. especially in outer boroughs

  • kevd

and all over manhattan. the people being stopped for there are just less likely to understand what is going on.

  • Rod

it's just that the nypd cherry-picks which laws they enforce.

  • kevd

    or above 110th st.
    or if you aren't white.

  • Rod

and isn't this the same mayor who promised to take on the mta if reelected in 2009?

isn't this the same mayor who said NYC taxes are too high and killing our economy and then raised taxes more than any pol in ny history?

    this clown needs to resign.

i don't even give him credit for the bike lanes or smoking bans because Mayor Mark Green would've done it all sooner.

  • Petey

What has he raised taxes on? Not city income tax, not property tax.
