Video: Do Smoking Scofflaws Deserve To Get Punched?
On Friday, MyFoxNY obtained video (below) of a lady on the B35 bus who clearly hasn't been on public transportation since the 80s. Passengers were outraged when the woman lit up a cigarette in the middle of the crowded bus, and then refused to put it out or to get off. The MTA says violators to their no smoking rule "will be fined," but the bus driver instead decided to kick her out. Sounds fair, right? Well, the blurry video seems to show the driver sneaking in a jab at the woman after he forcefully escorted her off:
Even though it's not like smokers get treated better anywhere else, witnesses say the punch may have been a bit harsh. Jermaine Johnson, who took the video, suggests the driver should have called 911: "Regardless of her being disruptive, she didn't make any strikes at anyone." Another woman said, "If that had been my mother it would have been a problem." The MTA acknowledges that it's illegal to smoke on any NYCT or MTA property, but say it is trying to identify the driver and interview him. They say his actions are inappropriate and he should have called the bus command center. And let the woman keep smoking on the bus, putting the passengers in grave danger? Bloomberg forbid!

she deserved it and its the only way she'll learn. plus, old women get all the sympathy. my bets are on that if it was a younger man smoking who got thrown off, no one would care as much.
The bus operator is actually stuck between a rock and a hard place. He can’t just let the woman continue to smoke, but if he contacts the NYPD, they’ll take _forever_ to come (if at all) and put him WAY behind schedule. At the same time, the TA is putting bus drivers one increasing pressure to keep to the schedule, with consequences if they don’t.
If he shows up at the end of his run late, ‘I had to deal with a smoking passenger’ may not cut it with his dispatcher.
I don’t endorse what he did, but I think I know where he was coming from.

This woman is great.
I smoke on the subway platform constantly. Sometimes waiting for 20 minutes you just have to deal with the MTA.
You know who I blame? Society

Praises to this wonderful bus driver. He should be given a medal. The woman smoking on the bus was creating a hazardous condition that posed a clear and present danger to all of the other passengers on the bus. Smoking is a filthy disgusting addiction that kills and hurts with second hand smoke. Being forced to breathe in her smoke is like being forced to ingest poison. I'd like to meet this bus driver and shake his hand.

"If that had been my mother it would have been a problem."
Why, because your mom is an idiot who doesn't know how NOT to smoke on a bus?

It's people like this that have ruined my right to enjoy a cigarette now and then :(

What do you expect? Like bus drivers are known for their superior negotiating skills and reasonable judgment...

He should've cleveland steamered that bitch

Its doubtful the driver would be so tough with a man who looks like he could punch back, hard.

As much as I dislike public employees unions, it's good to know TWU will probably soften any punishment this guy gets for dealing with that trash.

Wow, he treats his own like trash - can't blame him, eh...
whatever... throw the woman off the goddamn bus and get on with it. Move on with your day
People are getting way too sensitive in this country. I wonder if the people complaining about the bus driver's actions would mind when the cops come and taser the kook

I wonder what difference it will make when her lawyer is in touch with the city's law department.
