Over the weekend, we spoke with young City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Queens), who is seriously proposing legislation that would require all cyclists over the age of 18 who use city streets to register with the city and affix IDs to their bikes. Ulrich told us, among other things, "This is the reality of the situation we're in, given the large number of people on bikes. And frankly, it's amazing this hasn't been passed already. The people on bicycles brought this on themselves by behaving this way." Meanwhile, ABC 7 was out on the streets getting reactions from diehard cyclists braving the frigid elements. But some of the cyclists they found might not be the best spokespersons for the anti-license side.
As one young bicyclist, Natasha Giliberti, put it, "You have the audacity to be on a bike and navigating the city on a bike, and I think that deserves respect from the city." Yes, yes Natasha, we're all very impressed. (P.S.: You're not helping!)

Rod, you are a poor spokesman for the bicyclist of NYC. We're better off without your ignorant/inflammatory defenses. Please take a hike. You're a turkey.
Are you referring to the same automobile drivers that drive on suspended licenses and run over cyclists and pedestrians regularly?

Ulrich is probably one of the idiots who amble aimlessly in bike lanes, and doesn't look when he crosses the street. Maybe a leash on this dog will help him out.

Yo Rod! Seriously man, 20 posts? Really? When do you have time to rip around on your two wheeler bro?
there are more of them than us so someone has to counter all the turds.

Give the guy credit. He saw how much airtime and ink the media gives people who talk about bikes and decided to exploit it for all its worth. He went with a Hail Mary pass by calling for bike licensing and it got him valuable airtime on WABC, articles in local papers, and posts on tons of blogs, including this one. Not bad for a young City Council member no one would pay attention to otherwise. Does anyone think he would have received half the attention had he complained about the number of car accidents in his district, which includes Woodhaven Blvd, one of the deadliest in the city?
All this will do is give the NYPD an excuse to stop you on your bike for no reason other than to harass and check for your license. They do this in Tokyo to all non Japanese people. I once was stopped 3 times in one night riding around. The Japanese cops are a lot nicer, I can only image the NYPD having an "excuse" to actually stop you for no reason.

How will this work with the planned bike sharing where anyone will be able to ride one of the 10,000+ bikes DOT supposedly will be providing on the street? How will this work for people riding in from outside the city limits where the law does not apply? Why only bicycles and not scooters, skateboards and rollerblades? And ultimately how will registration numbers on bicycles result in more police enforcement of the existing laws? Just don't see the point.

I'm pondering the logistics of putting license plates or decals onto bikes and not having them easily ripped off.

I'm so over the rebellious, political, soldier mentality of NYC bikers. You're riding a bike. Get over yourself. And to the guy with the scarf, seriously dude, nobody is after you. Show your face if you want to talk about something. A registration doesn't turn people off from biking, it's this whole with us or against us attitude that people don't want to be associated with.
so if you try to run me down you will crash even harder and fly over your handlebars... and as you try to pick up your battered body from the filthy ground, several pedestrians will "accidentally" step on you and then you will be hit by at least 3 automobiles (one of them, an NYPD vehicle who completely ignores your need for 911) (and to add insult to injury, as you struggle up on your knees, you'll be sideswiped by the new $$$$ Segway-for-Idiots the NYPD just bought; but then he'll turn around and you'll think "see? not all cops are insensivitive"; but he'll just give you 3 tickets for blocking traffic).
have you thought this plan through?
