Rex Ryan said he needed to outcoach Bill Belichick for one game, and he did just that. The Jets went into Foxborough, Mass., and stunned the Patriots, 28-21, in an AFC Divisional Playoff. They have now reached the AFC Championship Game in each of Ryan's first two seasons.
Everyone was quick to jump on Ryan's pregame bluster, but it served as a wonderful distraction. The Jets looked nothing like the team that got blown out, 45-3, on Dec. 6. They sacked Tom Brady five times, forced him to throw his first interception in 340 pass attempts and denied him of his favorite wide receiver targets for most of the game. Mark Sanchez played a clean game, throwing three touchdowns and, unlike his counterpart, almost never felt pressure from a pass rush. Jerricho Cotchery had a huge reception and run after the Patriots cut the Jets' lead to three, and Santonio Holmes had a killer touchdown to cap that drive.
This week, the Jets will visit the Steelers for the right to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLV. They've already won in Pittsburgh this year, so Ryan knows his team is capable of winning a third road playoff game. What will he say to stir the pot this week?
Oh, and the Flyers beat the Rangers, 3-2.
