The Social Network Nets Four Globes, Glee Gets Three

No rest for the weary, moments after the Jets de-feet of the Patriots the awards season run-up to the Oscars kicked off for reals when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave out the 2011 Golden Globes. The boozy Ricky Gervais-hosted show (well, except when he went missing for an hour of the telecast) had the usual, in the words of Robert Downey Jr., "mean spirited with sinister undertones" vibe, but that is sort of the point. Though things started off with a surprise Best Actress in a TV Drama win for Sons of Anarchy's Katey Segal, the the big winner of the night was The Social Network, which took home four awards—Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), Best Dirctor (David Fincher) and Best Drama.

The other big winner for the night was Glee, which won both Supporting Actor awards for Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch, as well as the award Best TV Comedy. And even though he didn't win for Best Actor (that went to Paul Giamatti for Barney's Version), Mark Wahlberg the producer had a great night. The non-Entourage show he produces, Boardwalk Empire, won Best TV Drama and Best Actor in a TV Drama (Steve Buscemei) and The Figther, his latest movie which he also produced, got both Supporting Actor awards (Christian Bale and Melissa Leo).

Annette Benning's The Kids Are All Right performance won Best Actress in a Comedy (and before that, RDJ), and the movie also won Best Comedy. Natalie Portman got the Best Actress in a Drama Globe for Black Swan while Colin Firth took the Actor statue for The King's Speech. Michael Douglas meanwhile, recently recovering from a bout with cancer, probably got the biggest applause of the evening when he gave out the award for best movie drama ("there's got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation," he joked).

All in all was a pretty quick, if uneventful, three hours and we could have done with a whole lot more Rickey Gervais (he still managed to get a few good digs in). Still, after he closed the evening by thanking god "for making me an atheist," we're once again assuming he won't be doing this gig again. Did you watch?

No, not really. Buscemi is awesome though.

I like Gothamist, though - except for the stories that are on every other website in in the known universe. And the crazier reactionary commenters.

(Oh, if you paid for a subscription, I'd ask for your money back. Gothamist is a free site.)

    More 127 Hours was needed.

Not really getting why "The Social Network" got so much.
It was a dramatic hit piece, start to finish.

  • They all are very happy with this Award. And why not? because it is their achievement. It is great to see this group phot.

There is zero point in watching award shows in the Internet age unless you want something to fall asleep to.
