Cathie Black's Solution For Crowded Schools? Birth Control

Making choices is hard! (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)
Cathie Black is not having the most auspicious start as Schools Chancellor. Ignoring the whole waiver-fiasco and her fumbled first non-snow day last night she managed to let fly two tacky cracks that left some lower Manhattan parents unamused.

At a task force meeting last night to discuss the issue of overcrowding in lower Manhattan schools Black offered the following suggestion to deal with the issue: "Could we just have some birth control for a while? It would really help us."

Though it brought out a chuckle in the room at least one parent, who noted that previous chancellor Joel Klein made similar jokes in the past, wasn't laughing. "I understand the temptation to joke about it," they told the News. "But our situation isn't funny any more." Thanks to the proliferation of construction downtown without a similar expansion in school seats, lower Manhattan classrooms are at or above capacity. But at least Black didn't suggest downtown moms just get a few more abortions?

Black also irked some when she compared weighing the needs of different schools to Sophie's Choice. Maybe she hasn't had the ending of the book and movie spoiled for her? Either way, all we could think of when we read that was when Michael Scott had to make the "classic difficult decision" on The Office between renting the Devil Wears Prada again or "finally getting around to seeing Sophie's Choice."

Of course the general public can't appreciate the "high concept" perspective that Ms. Black brings to a job she is hopelessly over qualified for, Given her actual expertise, I'm expecting her upcoming policy initiatives will borrow heavily from literary classics, Swift in particular: "Chancellor Black seeks to increase protein content of student lunches with the flesh harvested from euthanised students."

    Yoda's got a new girlfriend.

    Ignorant and insensitive, she is.

    Excellent!

  • ganghiscon

She looks like a Dr. Seuss character.

  • splicernyc

Yes, it would really help. In this day and age is there really a need to have so many kids? Are there that many family lines that need to continue?

  • Rod

    oh christ... try this :

i just ate a pretzel while looking at the photo of Black.

    almost puked.

    i don't fully blame Black.

  • just saying

My solution for Cathie Black's gaffes: a muzzle.

is not one person in the press going to point out that mike bloomberg was the top funder of GOP candidates across america who are anti abortion?

everything these clowns say is pure hypocrisy.

  • Rod

just as you'll never seen one writer in the press remind people that no one did more to hinder gun control in the usa than mikey bloomberger.

he was the top funder of GOP candidates who are anti-gun control.

you'd think that MIGHT belong in any articles about his gun control rhetoric.

  • GentleGiant

Is this how Black is going to be treated? Is every minor gaffe, or perceived gaffe, going to be amplified and reported as a major mistake? Is the unstated goal among the media to make sure the new chancellor fails no matter what she says or does?

I'm neither a supporter or detractor but it just seems ridiculous that, because Bloomberg screwed up by not vetting her before announcing her appointment, Black must be shown to be incompetent before she gets the slightest chance to do her job.

  • twophrasebark

I don't think those are minor gaffes. Not at all.

    They are:

    - verbal gaffes from someone inexperienced with a job that requires her to both manage and speak for the country's largest public school system

    - indications that she is out of touch with the general populace, something that was a concern before she was officially appointed

    - a sign that, perhaps like her boss Bloomberg, she doesn't actually care what you think. Which would be a terrible portent for a job that requires delicate negotiations with teachers and parents.

It's for the last reason that I believe Black is completely wrong for the job. Everything Bloomberg chose her for makes her ill fit. She's a CEO long used to people jumping at her word and not having to deal with the opinions of others. I really hope she doesn't turn out to be as poor of a choice as it seems but I see a rocky road. She'll try to communicate with parents, get exasperated, blame the media and everyone else, and then embark on a contentious tenure until Bloomberg's term ends. That's exactly how Bloomberg ended up and she is an awful lot like him...

  • Rod

yeah, I THINK she knew what she was getting into BEFORE she started on the job.

she has no one to blame but herself.

    and bloomturd.

  • BoogieDown

You're that cxb guy posting under a new name, aren't you?

  • jaycjay

"Black must be shown to be incompetent before she gets the slightest chance to do her job."

I think many people would be happy just to see some evidence that she is competent.

And after all, she was sold to the city as being someone utterly brilliant; related experience wasn't necessary because of her perfection in every other way. Doesn't seem unreasonable to expect her to be held to a high standard as a result.

  • Rod

    you nailed it.

she is to be held to the HIGHEST possible standards since she is the best person on earth (for the job), according to her and mikey.

  • aloveston

Well, that's what happens if you have zero education experience & are appointed to oversee an educational system.

  • Rod

also, black was a FAILED magazine exec.

for some reason the press always leaves that little itty bitty fact out.

  • Guest

    Border control would help, too.
