Tucson Tea Party Co-Founder Says Tea Party Is Victim Too

Sarah Palin and the Tea Party have received a lot of criticism in the wake of last weekend's tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona, prompting Palin to defend herself in a video yesterday, using the antiquated claim of "blood libel." Now, Tucson Tea Party co-founder Trent Humphries has gone one step further, calling the Tea Party victims of the shooting, and arguing that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is partially responsible for having a lack of security. Regarding Palin's controversial gun-target map, he told the Guardian UK: "It's political gamesmanship. The real case is that she [Giffords] had no security whatsoever at this event. So if she lived under a constant fear of being targeted, if she lived under this constant fear of this rhetoric and hatred that was seething, why would she attend an event in full view of the public with no security whatsoever?"

Last night during his speech at a memorial in Tucson, President Obama revealed that Rep. Giffords had opened her eyes for the first time since being shot in the head on Saturday, a story corroborated by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who was holding her hand at the time. The latest report from doctors is that she is making a "miraculous recovery," opening her eyes, responding to commands, moving both legs and arms and doing specific things with her hands. Doctors are even hoping to begin physical therapy later this week. "Yes, miracles happen every day. A lot of medicine is outside of our control…We're wise to acknowledge miracles," said Dr. Michael Lemole, head of neurosurgery at University Medical Center in Tucson.

    Oh nice, blame the victims.

Simply amazing. Just when you think the Tea Party couldn't seem any more insensitive, along comes this tone-deaf twit. But, hey, sensitivity is for those wussy pussy liberals, right?

the tea party is responsible for this shooting just as much as obama is responsible for the haiti earthquake last year. but seriously how are they victims if they're not in the hospital?

this stupid bipartisan fighting, and the politicization of every single news story whether it is warranted or not, will tear this country apart and cause the next civil war.

  • Listen, I don't think Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, or the Tea Party were responsible for this shooting-- any more than Marilyn Manson was to blame for other shooting. Check. We've all heard that.

Counterpoint is: MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE THE SORT OF THING THAT PSYCHOS BOB THEIR HEAD ALONG WITH. Marilyn Manson is (was) at least a shock rocker, something for teenage rebellion.

You guys are supposed to be a political movement. When your rhetoric is indistinguishable from the rantings of mentally ill assassins? MAYBE YOU SHOULD RE-EXAMINE YOUR RHETORIC.

  • Very sensible and correct, I think, Mordicai. From Tea Party Nation....

"Fifty years ago, had Phelps (Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church) tried something like this, he would be met by not only the police, but also the men of the community he was going to. The police would make sure things did not get out of hand and then politely look the other way while the men of the community educated Phelps on his bad manners. When Phelps got out of the hospital, he would not do it again".

You can read it in it's entirety at teapartynation.com, if you register.

I concur with Mordicai that Tea Party Nation isn't directly responsible for the Tucson murders, but let's face it, the above is nothing less than an advocacy of mob violence against people whom one does not agree with. It sounds like Klan rhetoric. This is what sensible people are saying...that this kind of intolerant talk and attitude can only lead to more violence.

  • What is spooky is having to fight down the urge to agree with it. I mean-- I have heard the theory that Phelps & co are just a lawsuit generating machine, that the whole hateful rhetoric is just scam to sue people for assault. Seems eerily plausible.

Frankly, it is hard not to lump Phelps in as the extreme version of the Tea Party, though. It isn't a far cry from a "Adam & Eve Not Adam & Steve" sign or a "Baby Killers!" sign to the Phelps equivalents.

  • Funeral disrupting Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church have at least two things in common with Tea Party Nation....hatred for people not like them, and intolerance of any ideology that is not like theirs.

  • "Yes, miracles happen every day. A lot of medicine is outside of our control…We're wise to acknowledge miracles,"

I agree with you when they write about something that's completely unrelated to NY and unimportant, like the Lebron James tweeting non-story from the other day, but news from the surrounding metro area (NJ, LI etc) and major national news stories (the Tuscon shooting etc) has a place here.

  • Yes, sarcasm. New York is contained within the set of the United States, which is in the set of the world, which is in the set of...well, etc etc. National & global news effects us. If you don't want to read it, hit J in your Google Reader & skip past it. Just that easy.

  • Len_Drexler

Maybe people call out the Gothamist editors for non-New York stories because it is obvious they choose their "national" stories based on what they know will drive a flame war. And that equals page views.

  • diablofreak

well, it hasn't been snowing. and not enough bike lanes are cleared off for cops to block them yet so you don't see the whiners bitching.

what's there to do for a local blog? copy the headlines from cnn.

  • SuperWittySmitty

If it's true that she was "in constant fear of being attacked" then maybe there should have been some sort of security. Hey, terrorists can be anywhere and people are walking around with guns in Arizona. That means there will be shootings, and if I knew I had already been "targeted" I would think "security" before staging a public appearance.

  • shivabeach

Of course they are a victim, thats why 4 people are quitting their political jobs so they dont get shot

  • luke_1

Unfortunately justifications/excuses like that are all that is needed to keep followers of the Tea Party and extreme right loyal to the movement.

Trent also wonders why that one girl in college was wearing such short shorts if she didn't want to get raped.
