Tom DeLay Gets Three Years

201101_delay.jpg The hammer is coming down on The Hammer. Tom DeLay, former House majority leader and owner of the one of the best mugshots ever, was sentenced today to three years in prison for his role in a scheme that channeled corporate contributions around Texas. Of course DeLay, who is expected to make his $10,000 bond while awaiting an appeal, is still maintaining his innocence. "This is an abuse of power. It's a miscarriage of justice, and I still maintain that I am innocent," DeLay told reporters following his conviction. So this won't be the last you hear about DeLay, we're sure.

  • But he was so good at...what did he do? Oh, be the worst guy. I'm shocked, I tell you!

  • S.D.

Yeah! A National News Story should never be covered in Gothamist...

Since it was a State Court: I wonder if he wrote or called Gov. Rick Perry for a Pardon?

Bet his prison Mug shot will have a great smile too.

BottomlessChips liked this? Somebody's sarcasm meter is broken.

  • BottomlessChips

I hit like really fast and then tried to pull it back, which you can't. This Disqus is possibly worse than the old commenting system.

  • S.D.

@Bottomless Chips: Yeah, I figured that must be it.

On the Plus Side: Hey! We actually agree on something!
    There may be hope yet...
    ;)

  • BottomlessChips

    Haha cheers to that!

How is a Representative from Texas relevant to NYC? Oh wait, is it because he's a Republican?

Dianne Wilkerson just got sentenced. Where is the post about her? Oh wait, is it because's she's a Democrat?

More guessing games of old NYC photos, fewer politically charged posts, please!

  • m015094

Gothamist had no problem posting articles about the Rangel's BS. Get over your partisan delusion.

  • BottomlessChips

Let me break this down for you:

    Rangel: NYC
    DeLay: Texas
    Gotham: NYC
Gothamist: a blog, ostensibly, about NYC

  • jibbly

This is a blog, it's opinionated, they run non-NYC stories from time to time according to their whims, you may or may not bitch about it but they get page hits either way. Keep commenting, I'm sure they enjoy getting paid based on your misery!

  • BottomlessChips

As I've posted many a time, yes it's a ploy; I'm very aware. However, I'm also aware that impressions don't pay directly. Click throughs pay. I do click through on occasion when I'm interested in the ad on this site, though.

So I am supporting your sponsors, Ist and Jen Chung.

  • UncleWarbucks

It isn't really a delusion. Tom DeLay is not relevant to a NYC blog. Charlie Rangel, as a New York representative, IS relevant. Think first.

  • m015094

Tom Delay (20 year Congressman and former House Majority Leader) going to jail for 3 years is a little more important than some random State Senator from Massachusetts (Wilkerson). So, I preemptively accept your apology.

  • BottomlessChips

    Grasping at straws.

Name the past 15 House Majority Leaders: Go!

Oh wait, like 3 out of 100 Americans probably could name 10/15.

Okay, how about this...name what district DeLay represents: Go!

Oh wait, like half of the people in his district probably even know he's their U.S. Representative.

Wilkerson was fairly noteworthy in that she stuffed cash in her bra on video; it was pop-culture-relevant in that way.

  • Spirit of 76

You're the one grasping at straws. How many of those 15 majority leaders were sent to prison? That's what makes this a story. You're even more ideological than ides of march ever was and amazingly, more embarrassing.

  • BottomlessChips

So what makes it a relevant NYC story? House majority leader and the house minority leader are relatively unimportant. If he was a former Speaker of the House, that's more reasonable. I wouldn't flinch if another Newt Gingrich story popped up, but a House majority leader isn't anything to shake a stick at.

My point remains, Spirit of 76: Would Gothamist have covered this if Steny Hoyer was found guilty of a crime?
