Is The World Ready For Gatsby 3-D?

eckelgatsby111.jpg Director Baz Luhrman—who brought you Moulin Rouge and the 1996 Claire Danes-Leonardo DiCaprio version of Romeo + Juliet—acquired the rights to The Great Gatsby a couple of years ago, and word is that he's now aiming towards making it 3-D. Hedonism, opulence, material excess: in your face! Luhrman says he recently “workshopped” Gatsby (which will star DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan) using the 3-D technology, and will soon make a decision on whether to move forward with the idea.

Oliver Stone, who was on a panel with Luhrman over the weekend, pointed out that filming in 3-D would add at least 20% to the cost of production, and that most dramas aren't making money in 2-D... but maybe Stone is just bummed he didn't think of this for the Wall Street sequel. Anyway, if this moves forward, Doctor Eckleburg's eyes are going to be INTENSE.

Some movies are not meant to be in 3-D. This isn't an summer blockbusting action film.

There already was a 3-D version of Gatsby---

it was Elevator Repair Service's GATZ, at the Public Theater, and it was impeccable.

    ---Why bother?

Just drive out to Suffolk and crash some parties, hit on a girls out of your league and drive home drunk. Gatsby in 3D. Mortgage a 3 bedroom new condo & go broke on table service at the clubs - contemporary Gatsby in 3D.

Gatsby wouldn't have sat around some dingy bedbug infested theater watching The Great Gatsby, he'd probably wait until the Broadway production & then throw the after party or something.

Why not just change the script and have Gatsby live at the end and run off with Daisy?

Really. If you're shooting The Great Gatsby in 3D you might as well go for broke, right?

Instead of 3D, why doesn't Luhrman film the movie in "Schmaltz-O-Vision?"
