Update: Arizona Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Shot

According to reports, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot during a public appearance at a Tuscon grocery store today. There are conflicting reports whether she is in surgery or was killed. ABC reports that as many as 12 people had been shot at the "Congress at Your Corner" event outside a Safeway store, and that Giffords had been shot in the head. Two hours ago, she tweeted, "My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later." [UPDATES BELOW]

A witness, Jason Pekau, told CNN that he heard "15 to 20 gunshots." NPR says, the suspect was described as a white man in late teens or early 20s, and was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody after the shooting. Gawker spoke with eyewitness Steven Rayle, who said the shooter was clean-shaven with short hair, and "said nothing during the shooting or while being held down, although he struggled at first. He didn't look like a businessman, but more of a 'fringe character.'"

Giffords, 40, was first elected to Congress in 2006; you can see her voting record here. She's a gun owner and voted for the repeal of the gun ban in DC, but she gets a D+ from NRA. She also voted for health care reform, and called herself a blue dog democrat, and the most centrist member of the Arizona caucus in an interview with Greta Van Susteren (skip to the 7 minute mark). You can also see her alleged "last" TV interview here.

Reporter Matthew Cooper tweeted, "No American female politician has ever been assassinated. Praying Rep. Giffords isn't the first."

Update: Reuters and NPR are now reporting that Rep. Giffords and six others were killed in the shooting.

On CNN currently, they're talking about the unstable and incendiary political scene in AZ. Previously, Giffords was targeted by Sarah Palin as part of her anti-Obamacare "Take Back the 20" initiative, an attempt to replace 20 Democrats who voted for the health care bill; she recommended conservative Jesse Kelly to replace Giffords. Palin also used an unfortunate "gun target" image as part of the campaign. Giffords discussed Palin's initiative with MSNBC last March, and said, “Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they’ve gotta realize there are consequences to that action.”

UPDATE, 2:50 P.M.: Reuters is now tweeting: "FLASH: Congresswoman Giffords still alive, in surgery, nine other patients brought in from shooting: hospital spokeswoman." And CNN reporter Sam Feist tweets, "Rep. Giffords' local press secretary tells CNN that she is still in surgery. Law enforcement sources say she has died."

Sarah Palin wrote her reaction to the shooting on Facebook. There is also a Facebook group entitled "Gabrielle Giffords is a LIAR and must be STOPPED" (which refers to this story) with 23 members.

UPDATE, 3:20 P.M.: the Times is now reporting that one of the victims was a young child and appeared to be in critical condition with a gunshot wound. A news conference is expected to be held in the next hour with more updates. The Post talked to Giffords father, Spencer Giffords, 75, and asked if she had any enemies: Yeah. The whole tea party."

UPDATE, 3:45 P.M.: Times reporter Brian Stelter tweets, "Ariz state senator Linda Lopez tells Fox, 'We just heard that she is responding to commands. She made it through surgery.'"

The Times has a live blog with more reactions to the shooting. According to Rich Castigar, the chief of the Pima County police department,18 people had been shot in the incident and six people are dead. According to ABC, "10 people shot, 4 stable, 5 critical, 1 child dead. Doc extremely optimistic Giffords will survive."

UPDATE, 4:15 P.M.: According to AP, the shooter has been identified as 22-year-old Tucson native Jared Lee Loughner. Business Week is speculating that this is his YouTube channel, and this is a picture of him. Anthony de Rosa tweets, "The aforementioned page on Jared Loughner's MySpace has been taken down. It had a photo of a Glock on a book, possibly the Constitution."

UPDATE, 5:05 P.M.: AnimalNY has screengrabs of Loughner's strange MySpace page here (the account has since been removed). MSNBC reports that Giffords had received several death threats in the past year, and "was among several members of Congress whose vote in favor of Obama's health care legislation sparked vandalism and threats by opponents of the bill."

Regarding Giffords current condition, the most recent update from Dr. Peter Rhee at the University Medical Center in Tucson was, “I can tell you at this time, I am very optimistic about her recovery. We cannot tell what kind of recovery but I’m as optimistic as it can get in this kind of situation.” Eighteen people were wounded altogether in the shooting, and at least five are dead, including a 9-year-old and a federal judge, John Roll.

UPDATE, 6:15 P.M.: Gawker has a rundown of more info on alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner, including the aforementioned MySpace page, YouTube videos, and pictures. In addition, there's a twitter exchange between Caitie Parker, who claims to be a former friend of Loughner's, and Anthony De Rosa. She says that she was in a band with Loughner; he was "a pot head & into rock like Hendrix, The Doors, Anti-Flag;" when she knew him he was "left wing, quite liberal and oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy;" and he had once met Giffords before: "He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in '07, asked her a question & he told me she was 'stupid & unintelligent.'" She adds that he dropped out of school in '06 after getting alcohol poisoning, and was "mainly loner very philosophical."

I certainly hope that Archbishop Egan has been moved to a secure, undisclosed location after all the HATEFUL LIBERAL RHETORIC that was spewed here the other day.

Oh, wait...I forgot...when LIBERALS spew hatred its "speech"....

Paula, How much does your rock cost per month? Do you own or rent? Must be a nice rock you live under.

To me, his stuff on youtube and myspace reminds me of the convoluted anti-tax and anti-government philosophies of folks like the Sovereign Citizen's Movement, Posse Comitatus, the Montana Freemen and David Wynn Miller.

All of these people would be considered crazy by most, but at the same time they do represent far-right political movements that have influenced other anti-tax, anti-government people.

He seems to be just a lone wacko with a manifesto, like the Columbine kids or the VT shooter. He has problems with the gov't and with random things that make literally NO sense. Nothing to do with right or left. Crazy got no affiliation.

  • So just about anyone can go on twitter, say they knew him, and start making up personality traits and politicals leanings, and the blogs will just start quoting it? Wow.... "journalism" today has just about hit rock bottom.

  • Hitler was also a very powerful politician and leader who was able to reach out to all the "utterly insane". Didn't we ultimately condemn him for his actions??? I don't necessarily believe that guns should be illegal, but what on earth is wrong with stiff govt. regulations??? Yes, guns do kill people because if this "utterly insane" person had no gun and had to run each and every one of these victims down, would the outcome still be the same? Maybe if he used a bomb, but, ummm, bombs are illegal aren't they... My prayers go out to all the victims in this shooting.

I wonder what Palin is thinking about this map now: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

Heh, an aide has denied that the symbols on the graphic are even gunsights.

Denial of reality is *not* the way to play it, though I can't say I'm surprised.

Really though, what can they do?

"It was just a metaphor" is a little too sophisticated and not their style at all.

"We are sorry, we went too far" admits guilt and implies responsibility for something quite serious. You can't just say "we misspoke" when a bunch of people are dead.

The main strategy coming out of apologists on the internet seems to be "everybody uses imagery like this" which is patently false and "you can't prove she is responsible" which is dangerously uncontrite.

  • This girl is about to be all over tv.

@caitieparker did he identify himself as a member of the Tea Party?

Meh, in his youtube manifesto (posted at huffington post, where its the third one) he writes a bunch of crazy gibberish but also two right-wing talking points - that people should reject "federalist" laws that violate the constitution and also that he won't accept a currency system that is not based on the gold standard.

Possible left-wing themes are much more abstract - the theme of "dreaming," a lot of Derrida-type nonsense about mind control through grammar, and a possible mention of atheism. He sort of embraces the notion that he's a terrorist, which a right-winger wouldn't do.

His first allegiance was obviously with the crazy.

  • julian_oatmeal

nothing beats a tragic story like this to enable people to get on a soapbox to tell us how right they were right about gun control, republicans, sarah palin, etc.
though i'd bet that this, like most things this senseless and shocking, will turn out to have been committed by someone utterly insane.

  • robingee

Nah, no one in their correct mind would blame anyone for this except the kid himself. He's nuts.

  • handsomedevil

Regardless of precisely what Mr. Loughner turns out to be, you can indeed make valid points about two of those three things because of this incident.

    1) Palin remains an asshole for creating her little target map and refusing to apologize for it, because politicians do get assassinated, and it's not a cute little joke to titillate your fan base with. Even if it's not remotely plausible that it's her fault, she still sucks.

    2) And the idea that somebody like Loughner can legally obtain firearms (which I'm comfortable assuming is the case because of his army and police affiliations) is insanity in itself.

  • S.D.

RE: 1) Do we really need politicians to use violent imagery and rhetoric to encourage wackos?
    ‘Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!’
    '2nd Amendment Remedy'
    'WE CAME UNARMED [THIS TIME]'

It has no place in Political Discussion and one would hope a half term Governor would know that.

  • SPsGhost

"utterly insane" is how I would diagnose 99% of self described "conservatives"

  • Trustafarian

    not cool!!

  • Let's just get this over with and have a civil war.
