A New York actress living in Toronto is being charged with kidnapping an Indian infant from a bogus casting call she set up on December 30. Michelle Marie Gopaul allegedly set up the call for a Bollywood-style shoot looking for an infant of Indian descent. When a baby she liked (and its parents) arrived, she asked to take it into another room for something and never returned. The baby turned up at a police station four hours later.
Gopaul, an aspiring actress and musician, had apparently been telling friends she was pregnant in the months before the kidnapping. The Globe and Mail recaps her actions before the kidnapping, which paints the picture of a very sad young woman in a very large hat.
The baby, who we suspect will never again be let out of the sight of her parents, is doing fine. Gopaul, who is being charged with the abduction of a person under 14, has had her bail denied.
