Parking Meters In Effect Just In Time For Price Hike

010311meter.jpg Even though alternate side parking remains suspended today, parking meters are back on, which is great for the city because today they're rolling out higher parking meter rates. Starting in Manhattan and Queens, a quarter will now get you just 15 minutes instead of 20, and Muni-meters in Manhattan south of 86th Street will now cost $3 an hour instead of $2.50. Bronx will see changes in March, followed by Brooklyn and Staten Island in April. Unless they secede, in which case the rest of the city will have all the money we need and prices will never go up again.

  • Not that I ever drive in the city, but man! That's expensive!

In the city I used to live in (yes I'm a transplant) it was only 25 cents for an hour.

15 mins? Man, where I am, it's 10 mins for a quarter. Still beats the heck out of private garages, though.

why is queens rolling this out with manhattan?

here's my plan to the City Council in response the the threat of SI Secession:
1 roll out additional rate increase to staten island, where the fee will rival manhattan, if not more than it.
    2. add parking meters on residential streets, even on private driveways
    3. add some toll booths along i-278 staten island expressway
    4. hilarity ensues

"alternate side parking remains in effect today,"

uh, no, alternate side parking was still SUSPENDED today. That's the opposite of "in effect." New year, same totally worthless writing.
